I know how the cups and balls works but I'm intrested in the best source where the moves are described in great detail, what do you think is the best place to learn this from?

The book by Michael Ammar, "The Complete Cups and Balls".
This is out of print now but copies can be found, there was (is) one for sale here at the Café. You can find it here! Get this and Mr. Ammar's DVD set of the same name and you will be well on your way to your own C&B routine.

Another suggestion is to read and study nothing and begin experimenting with things and create what you think is possible for awhile. Then study the basics.

If, unlike Pete Biro's superb mind, your imagination works better when triggered by other people's examples, Michael Ammar is definitely the first source (save time and buy the DVDs)
Then you'll be able to enjoy The Stanyon lessons on cups and balls which appeared in several magazines (Stanyon's Magic for sure and Phoenix I think) are a great fairly unknown source suggesting solutions to show three balls using three, four, five or six balls (placing you way ahead). Eddie Joseph books on C&Bs are unfairly criticized for nationalistic prejudice reasons. Despite what some people claimed Eddie was a real performer and you can buy his work on e-books form. It will open your mind on using other things than just the classic balls Frank Garcia's book with early Richard Kaufman illustrations includes Sam Leo Horowitz routine which would benefit from a rework of its initial sequence Jerry Mentzer Close Up files will introduce you to the proper use of magnets Tarbell course in Magic (together with Menter's book) will get you into the mouth up cups subtleties. If you go this way for part of your routine, buy the manuscript on Fred Kaps routine and check Mentzer's book. For an original routine design check Dick Biow's or Johnny Paul's or Sam L Horowitz routine and diverge from them. The Sphinx also has several very interesting routines which have fallen into oblivition. No matter what people tell you, don't start with Dai Vernon's routine. There is nothing wrong with it (it's in fact very good) but EVERYONE does it and after putting the work in it, you will feel frustrated that everyone knows exactly what you do and does the same routine as yours. Look at the reputation that magicians like Kent Gunn or Antonio Romero made overnight by coming with an original routine: you don't have to get as technically advanced as Jason Latimer to hit the bell. The unexplored or under explored avenues are invisible thread combined with magnets and metallic balls (real and false: some metallic and some just painted metallic) For the effects check all the possible locations (in the hands, on the mouth down cups, in the mouth up cups, under the mouth down cups spread, under the cups stacked, into nested cups, in your pocket, up your sleeves, by your elbow, in your pants pocket, in your jacket pocket, in your wand, through the table...) and start looking for effect connecting them either at once (three balls meet there at once) or progressively (first one ball meets the other and then the second one joins). Thus you could start with moves involving only the balls and then input the wand to show that it is actually magical and then only input the cups Don't forget to (virtually) cause every magical effect that you have prepared For the large loads try to find original solutions: Tom Stone has a smart one which almost no one knows. David Berglas, Tommy Wonder, Scott York also suggest solutions to get the large loads without going to the pockets. If you are attracted to use multicolor balls check Kent Gunn's Fun Shop C&Bs, Brian McDougall's chameleon cups and balls, Aldo Colombini, Leo Leslie and my own work (Magic from France with Joe Stevens Greater Magic Video Series). For crystal clear glasses, check George Blake, Pete Biro's lecture notes (with a sanitizing paper and a magnet), Antonio Romero (superb technique and a lesson in misdirection) and my own work (see above) Thus you can see that it is not that complicated to design your own original routine by just combining what you like in there and using a bit of brain. Then read Darwin Ortiz's Designing Miracles and Strong Magic together with the Pete McCabe book on "scripting magic" before placing the cherry on the cake: it's a great fun to build your own routine. It will keep your imagination on steroïds for a long time: it's real fun and it's very, very rewarding.

Actually. ahem, I do a variation of the Vernong routine but with totally original presentational style when I DO A CLASSIC 3 CUP ROUTINE. However, I seldom do a classic 3 cup routine preferring the Indian cups or a sinle bowl routine.
Lawrence O offers some excellent sources and thinking. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day... so, with that in mind, it may take you a couple of years to develope a routine that fits you and you hve developed the necessry chops.

There is no doubt that the Michael Ammar DVDs are the best source. You receive not only techniques, vanishes and all the moves you need, but you receive C&B culture. That is something that not all the C&B magicians know. He guides you through history of the C&B and all the history, classics and annals of this wonderful delight.

Some of us don't like videos. I just feel I get ripped off, when I compare the value of a book. Just me . . . no flames intented here!
Romero's written work in not yet available in English? It's another good reason to marry someone who is fluent in Spanish though. Antonio's book (in Spanish or French) is available. If you really want his book you can get it here: http://www.dirac.es/SEI/juego/libros/romero.htm#PROLOGO Si deseas comprar el libro, envia un e-mail a Antonio Romero Translates into: If you wish to buy the book, send an email to Antonio Romero. His email address is on that page. Bablefish will translate well in small snippets. Antonio's routine is worth the trouble to translate, even if you have to talk your wife into it! I still think this is the easiest routine for beginners. No difficult moves. It's a very simple routine, yet seems to go over well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEYmGnK4K9g All kidding aside. Antonio's book is wonderful. KG |

The price for the book is in pesetas, a currency that is not used any longer in Spain, so whoever is interested in the book should get a more up to date pricing.
Taking the pesetas price "as good" the book should be around $33 dollars. |

I second the Ammar book. Learning from the greats and creating your own style is the way to go. Also L&L came out with 3 new World's Greats Magic DVDs all about Cups and Balls. Check it out.

I don't see the DVD on the web site. This page is obviously rather old, because the prices are all in Pesetas. You might want to send an e-mail to Rafael Benatar, who can translate it for Antonio. Antonio speaks some English, but not a whole lot.
The Magic Workshop is probably not Romero's main web site. However, whoever runs it obviously is in contact with him, so you might e-mail them and ask for info on his DVD.

Gazzo's Street Cups is a great routine and Gazzo'z performances on the DVD are ridiculously funny.
Mark Raffles' The Legacy DVD is mostly a pickpocketing DVD but it's got a great segment on his cups and balls with chicks routine. So if you ever want to produce livestock, this is the source. Mike Ammar's Complete Cups and Balls DVDs are fairly comprehensive (if not a little hokey). All three DVDs have their merits and their flaws. |

.........But for beginners you'd want to steer clear of the Gazzo material until you've gotten a good, solid grounding in the fundamentals. For this, nothing tops Ammar's Complete Cups and Balls - ideally, both the DVDs and the book - they complement each other.

Sometimes I think Gazzo's work is for no-one but Gazzo himself, because it is all about his style of performing. The C&B seems to be a smaller part of his entire performance.
I would not want to see someone dress, act, breath, and perform like Gazzo; I rather see Gazzo himself! |
