I am in the early stages of writing my dream show...and I want to be the chief performer of my illusion show as a princess. There is plenty of talk on here about female magicians and illusionists...but are there any who do not use their sex appeal as part of the act? It seems as though the "rules" of performing for families changes when we take it to big boxes on a stage rather than a living room...suddenly you can get away with swords and fire and sexy costumes knowing full well of kids in the audience. I am looking to design a family friendly illusion show (as I think most illusion shows are billed this way) and I am wondering of female illusionists who have done something of this vein in the past.

Any thoughts?

Melinda, did a wonderful TV special for Disney, that was very family friendly. I believe if you can get your hands on a copy, you will see what I mean. Very child friendly, with Melinda the Magic Lady that comes to the child in her dreams. There were many, many female magicians just do a little research, and very few used the "sexy" button. Rai

Any clue as to where I can find a clip of a less sexy routine? I have no problem with that stuff...it's just not what I'm looking to do for this particular act.

Many thanks.

That was NOT from the Disney special! That was from a special in the UK. Find the Disney one, it had children in it! And it was for children NOT adults!

I forgot, there are some early videos of Gerry Larson (Milt's famous mother) doing her "The Magic Lady" specials on early TV in LA. You could call the Castle and inquire if they are available. She was very popular in early television, and had big ratings, there was also the great Dell O'Dell in LA, A little later. (I did a guest spot on that show in 1953!

Matt: That is a PERFECT example. She is an amazing woman and a great magician. She is also beautiful but she does not come across as selling sex so much on stage.

Agreed. Lyn Dilies is one of the few female illusionists along side Juliana Chen that is really Decent. No offence here but sometimes the whole 'sex sells' technique seems very cheap. Good one there Matt! And HELLO Kyle ! Hows life man??

Yes, looked into Lyn, thank you!!! I want to have some flexibility...after all princesses are always really beautiful and at times "sexy"---some twirling across stage, perhaps skirts shorter than ballgowns...but in general sexiness is not going to be the focal point. I am going to look into Juliana Chen as well, and if anyone can find the other clips of Melinda that would be awesome!

Any other advice on the contradictions mentioned in the first post would be aweosme.

Alexa, I don't know how I forget, the beautiful Celeste Evans, we workded together years ago, a lovely lady and performer. I believed she was just honored recently. Richly deserved! She was one of the early dove workers!

Gerry Larsen's videos are available through the Miracle factory converted from videos made by Bill McIlhany.

Lynn Dillies is one of the hardest working illusionists I ever worked with. Weighing probably 100# dripping wet, she not only does and energetic and well presented show, but then she loads up the boxes, trunks and drives the truck. Not just a pretty face.

Don't forget Tina Lennart. She has beautiful flowing routine routines and does not resort to sex appeal.

Tina has great act. I do not put in the same category as Lynn as an act is much different than a full show.

Both are cherished friends and I enjoy both in their own way.

BTW, Looking forward to working with you both in Canton.

Thank you gentlemen so much! Working on a promo video (not for an illusion show, per se, just what I do) but I am using a dollhouse production in it so I will post it here in a few weeks when it's ready. My first proper illusion act. (not counting things like the flying carpet at birthday parties.) In the meantime am going to check out some of the fantastic leads you've all given me!
