I have a problem with Word that has never occurred before:

See, I was sitting on my computer writing an essay on the history of magic when I suddenly saw a mistake I had done two paragraphs above in the text. So I clicked on it to correct it, but nothing happened! I clicked again with the same result.

It occurs as though I'm not able to use the mouse at all! I can't copy, paste, mark the text or anything else in Word. This is very frustrating, and I have no idea how to solve it.

Does any one have a solution?

Regards,

Daniel

What OS and version of Word are you running? I know someone who had problems with Vista and Word '07. I found a fix for it, but it deals with changing the Registry. You don't want to mess with the Registry if you don't know what you're doing.

I'd start by reinstalling the program. Have you installed or updated anything lately? Updates can do some wacky things.

Only that document? Any other programs running? Scanned clean for "stuff" you might have acquired online?

If your keyboard is still working, then hold down the Alt key and hit F at the same time. That will bring up the File menu. Then, without releasing the Alt key, hit S. That will launch the file save dialog.

Then you can save the file using your keyboard. Hit enter to hit the ok button, and the Esc key to cancel.

Jonathan is right though, the autosave feature is very worthwhile.

If both your mouse and keyboard are dead, then reboot and hope that Microsoft Word's document recovery feature works.

Dang, you guys are smart. I was going to tell him to take a photo of the screen and turn that in.

(Man, I wish we had computers when I was in school. Can you students email in work or turn in a disk? That would be cool. I thought I was a bad *** when I got a typewriter in college.)

Drop Word like a hot potato and use the (free and Word-compatible) Open Office.

The mouse still works, but is not recognized in word. You can save and open files and such, but when it comes to clicking on the actual text, it doesn't respond.

There must be a way to fix this within word; I must have clicked on a short-cut to this feature by acccedent.

Daniel

Just a thought have you tried the basic save shut down your PC and re-boot?
If so does the problem present when you open word after restarting your PC?

If the problem is persistent and you urgently need to finish your essay, as mentioned above I would recommend downloading OpenOffice then you can worry about fixing word later after you have finished. OpenOffice can open all Microsoft word documents.

Your problem may have been caused by a Microsoft automatic update running while Word was open.

Here is Microsoft's solution to your problem.

Let us know if it works.

That's a new one for me. Which version of Word are you using?
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.
