I have looked into the IBM and SAM for my area and the closest club for me is IBM in Grand Rapids. Which is almost 2 hours away. So, I would only be able to come to half of the meetings if I'm lucky. I have asked myself what I want out of joining a club and this is what I have come up with.
1. Meet other magicians 2. Get help to develope my routines to move from just doing tricks to scripting an Act. Something I am currently having a hard time doing. 3. Get adive on resources on how to achive #2. Which I can do on this forum What advice can you guys give me? Thanks Brian |

I would suggest that you contact Sindy at IBM headquarters, and she can put you in touch with the T.V.P. for your area/State. He has a list of active members with National and maybe there are enough of members close to you to start your own ring. It's worth looking into.
As President of Ring 200, we are always looking for new members who want to take their magic to "The next level". Not only do we share with each other to make ech other better performers, we have a very active youth program with some real blooming talent. If all else fails, you could move to NJ and join us...LOL Hope you find an answer that will get you what you are looking for. Yours in Magic, ERIC |

Another reason to join:
Life long friendships. Some of my greatest friends are members of Kansas City Ring 129. Through local memberships I have became great friends with many of the city's top performers. I also met my WIFE and Stepson at the magic meetings. I had a magic wedding and several members of both IBM and SAM performed in my wedding and Duane Fields built the illusion I produced my wife in, so you never know it may be one of the greatest things you ever do. Several of our members live quite a distance and We are always glad to see them, when they attend meetings. You may also ask if the nearest ring would consider your signing up as a distant membership at a discount, and it is always free to attend your first couple of times. Get a hold of one of the members from their website and go to a meeting, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Eric |

While you can obtain some great information on this forum, there is no substitute for actual human contact in your pursuits.

In my experience the clubs are social organizations that have goals in direct opposition to the goals of the creative artist.

Big Daddy Cool said; "In my experience the clubs are social organizations that have goals in direct opposition to the goals of the creative artist." If you are ever in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area during one of our club dates, you might want to stop by. Please phone first for an invitation.
Some of the club meeting topics include Psychology, Stanislavski acting, stage movement, and workshops like “How To Make Your Best Better”, Character magic, etc. I have been to quite a number of other club meeting where similar creative ideas are discussed and also to a few that had no interest in the creative side of magic. My point is; Do not judge all clubs by a few experiences. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard Phone: 269-501-2573 Michigan Magic Day 2009 http://www.MichiganMagicDay2009.com |

Some great points about joining obviously some clubs Im envious of the enthusiasm & goals of some clubs
mentioned unlike here in NZ with only 1 club -the memberships are dropping rapidly due to no goals basically & no shows ever organised for the public & very limited teaching. the odd small convention is put together but they are repetitive from previous years gone by but its all we have, most new members in the last 3 years have all left, I can see why! Brian-If theres a great club nearby any where in your area or keen members to catch up with & want to meet & help you - Go for it-can open many doors theres some good advice for you in these posts!!!!!!! Cheers |

OK...
I've been a little down on local rings recently. I've been feeling convicted of my attitudes. Here is what is boils down to: Local Rings are good for and to some people and personalities. For others they are not. It was a painful process for me because I just don't fit. It's a square peg in a round hole. It isn't the ring, it's me. So, do go and check it out. Join and have a ball! |

While it's true that clubs vary, and I only go to perhaps 1/3 of my club's meetings, they are a wonderful place to meet friends and see magic done. In the Youtube era, there's still something to be said for live performance, and coaching and assistance. Plus, you meet nice people you then gab with about other things . . . Pretty soon you have friends from different geographic areas, interests, etc. who you never would have met if not for the magic club. There really is no substitute for being there. . .

If a person is totally ego-driven and unable to accept any criticism then clubs are definitely not for you. There is a lot of give and take required in any social situation and if that's not your thing, then it's best to hit the road.
Club dinosaurs can be a pain to deal with but I have witnessed a lot of shift of power in area organizations that some of the dinosaurs felt compelled to start their own club a few years back because they didn't like being out of power. If you want to be one of the guys join a ring. If you want deciples, start a cult of personality. But, being in a magic club gives you the opportunity to interact with a variety of people and that is a big part of real life. If you so insulate yourself from people who think differently you might as well become a politician and move to D. C. and lose touch with the real world. Play nice.

Very well said Dr. Reneau. Most of my experiences with the clubs in the Nashville area have been positive. I like the brotherhood and camaraderie that the clubs afford. I have made friendships that are lifelong with some of my friends being as close if not closer than my own brothers and sisters. We laugh together, argue with each other, and yes cry together when we see one of our members hurt or pass away. We can bounce ideas off each other, look at each other’s work, and hopefully raise our own skills and the art of magic.
I have gotten more than my monies worth. Unfortunately, it is like you said, it only take one person or a group of people to screw up a good thing (It's my way or no way!!!). Usually these folks are egocentric, narcissistic and very selfish. If it is not building them up or they are not the center of attention, they make things miserable for everyone; kind of like throwing a temper tantrum. Their's is the only and last opinion that matters and if I don't think it is important, its not. Quite honestly, they need to take their toys and go elsewhere or learn the social skills that it takes to get along with other people. David W. |

A friend of mine recently decided to leave a group not because the group was bad, but because he had different goals, and a different purpose than the club. In his words he just did not feel like he fit in. In the end it is a very individual situation. I used to be part of a dance club and loved every minute but knew some of the other girls hated it. If you are naturally a joiner you will enjoy the club experience, but if you tend to isolate yourself or only associate with very few people it will be more difficult.
