Hi Paul,
Its odd you mention that and when I read your message I had to go back and look at the A1 video, and your right he does all the patter about having to go into the box and go through the cards and subtract from a number etc to get to their card. I never really noticed that before. The reason I was suprised was because I remember seeing Larry lecture at Blackpool on this effect and I could swear he did the effect exactly as you said it should be done, by going into the guys pocket and supposedly looking at the card, I can remember it quite clearly as he talked right into the microphone in a kind of trance like state, but made some gags about lint and fluff in the guy's pocket... which is why it suprised me to re-watch the A1 tape and see him do it differently, but at the end of his presentation on the tape he does say something about 'going into a persons pocket or the case' just as a throwaway... So I'm not sure if he changed his presentation or if he uses either version I suppose the first one that you don't like has more comedy potential, and the second would be played as serious? Also if you want a great version of this kind of trick look up Sean Taylor's 'Worlds Collide' in the Mark Leveridge Symposium 7 book, turns Larry's effect into a close up coincidence effect. Actually Sean's version uses the method of Larry's 'Simple Case of Logic' off the Desert Brainstorm tape which according to Sean is a better version of Out of Body, I haven't seen this, has anyone seen it? I can gather the new method from Sean's writeup and its an ingenious way to do OOB with an almost normal case! (sorry if this is revealing too much but buy the book or tape for the real work!) Lastly I think I remember OOB being advertised in Abra for a HUGE amount of money, and knowing now what it is it makes you wonder! Sorry to be so long winded. Rich. |

I only have one trick with the stacked deck but it works well...I have someone take a card. I then shuffle the deck...I tell them with my quick mind I can find which card they took by going through and finding which one is missing....great trick...Jeff Have you found anything great since you started this topic??
thanks, Jeff Quote:

Rich,
I should point out there's a better out of body type card effect in an old book of mine called Mental Mix, available from Russell Hall in Sheffield. Didn't mention it before, you know how reserved us Brits are. Jeff, that's good as a fake memory stunt until you meet the dumb spectator who just looks you straight in the eye and accuses you of looking to see which one is missing. Duh! Paul Hallas. |

Hi Jeff. The best thing I have come across is the Larry Becker handling we mentioned. That made the divine a card plot stong enough for me to start using it.

For those of you who get the "Linking Ring", there is a great routine from Boris Wild called "Double Personality" in the March 2002 issue.
It uses the Si Stebbins stack with a marked deck and a "invisible Deck" for a great prediction effect. Page 106 in Tom Cravens article. Jeff

I have to wholeheartedly agree with the post about the Gene Anderson Routine (I like it better than his newspaper tear)! His Si Stebbins routine is excellent and I've seen it several times, over the years. It will fry a lay audience!

James Swain has a nice routine called "A Tribute to Dunninger" in 21st Century Card Magic. Again, if you're learning Stebbins, Darwin Oritz's "Si Stebbins Secret" in Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table is well worth the time and effort.

Yes that Swain routine did stand out to me as a good cabaret routine, but I have never got around to trying it.
There is also a Frank Lane gem that can be found in one of his booklets on The Learned Pig site or CD. Paul Hallas |

I must admit that, for the most part, I use a stacked deck for when I'm practicing my classic force. If I mess up and the spectator takes the wrong card, I can immediately work out which one he has taken.
I mostly tend to build a partial stack while performing other effects, and work from there. Very rarely do I have a full deck stack, mostly because I borrow decks from people. |

James Swain has an excellent routine with a stack deck in 21st Century Card Magic. Makes you really look like a mind-reader. Highly recommended.

For years I've been using Kirk Charles' routine "Three Cards In Pocket" from his 1991 lecture notes "Tricked and Tricked Again".
It is a killer effect and has fooled all magicians and lay people alike. I'm already sorry I gave it away .......... |

IanB,
I'm not familiar with "Three Cards In Pocket". Is it a variation of Annemann's "Par Optic Vision" where a spec takes 3 cards without looking at them, places them in his pocket and is told to take out any card and you tell him what it is, then it's basically repeated with the other 2 cards? "Three Cards In Pocket" is completely different and far stronger than "Par Optic Vision". The spectator selects three cards from the deck and places them into three different pockets. You place the remainder of the deck into your pocket. They choose one of their pockets in turn, and you proceed to produce the duplicates from your pocket. I'm still sorry I gave it away ......... |

You can do great tricks with a gimmicked card case and a stacked deck like Becker's "out of body"
Sorry, I maybe wrong with the name of the trick. |

If you get an ace to the face and do a couple of out faros you can find the cards for Re-set pretty quickly if you know what I mean. You could also ask somebody to nominate a number of poker hands. Then ask which should be the winner. Have someone cut the cards and deal from where they cut. Do a bottom deal on the winning hand, and there it is. Quite demanding sleights though.

Scott Imler's "Cyber Card" is an excellent effect that uses the Si Stebbins stack and anyones PC that has internet access. Brilliant thinking on this effect. It's just plain cool! Great office magic!

Another cool effect with the Si Stebbins would be Ackerman's Opener.
