Big Daddy Cool (BDC) and Company launched the Club Roxy Revue in middle Tennessee this evening, prior to their trip to the Big Apple. I had the opportunity to see the show and offer this quick review for those contemplating seeing it in New York.

As BDC has said elsewhere, there are few musical magical theatrical productions. It's hard enough to write a story. Harder still to mix in music and dance. Add humor and magic? Whew! Too tough for me, but not for a cool club owner who has a few tricks up his sleeve.

John Pyka wears the role of Johnny (Big Daddy Cool) Dellarocca like a second skin. Sporting a zoot suit and healthy dose of humor, Pyka sings, dances and "magishes" his way through the story of a club owner facing down the challenge of a rival (Lonny Chilton as mobster Frank Palumbo), trying to take over the club.

Big Daddy Cool has the pipes to carry the songs and the ability to bring the crowd along for the ride, especially during the chorus of Minne the Moocher. His magical talent carries the show well.

Lonny brings to mind Joe Piscipo, masterfully playing a mobster several cards shy of a full deck and barely under control.

The Swing Kittens (BDC's Magical Chorus Line) offer energy, bright smiles and a rythmic counterpoint to Pyka's larger than life stage presence.

Add to this a quick-paced plot spiced with humor and you experience a show that is funny and engaging. It will leave you wanting to pick up a Cab Calloway CD, a Bogart movie and your favorite stage magician on DVD. Do it the easy way... Go see the Club Foxy Revue.
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.
