If you can also find Paul Winchell's video, that would most certainly help you get started.

I will second the Mark Wade DVDs. They are very easy to work with, and have great examples of live performance as well as private instruction. His book on Kidshow ventriloquism is awesome. He has done everything from small school shows to touring as country superstar Garth Brooks opening act, so he has a lot to offer....

I've got to second the Paul Winchell DVD - you can sometimes find it on eBay or purchase through Lee Cornell's Ventriloquism101.com

Paul's teaching really delivers on the labial sounds - B,F,M,P, & V. In my opinion, it is the best for pronounciation.

I agree. Paul's is the best. I have to break down and get the DVD one day. I still have the video (remember those)

Mark Wade's DVD is also very helpful but the thing that I like about Paul Winchell is that his intstructional video is very entertaining...like it's a show Smile

In my mind, vent may be learned in five steps:

1) Buy a dvd, such as those suggested above, and learn the lip movements (the technical side)
2) Start practicing a bilabial-free (no b, p and m) script with vent in front of a video (the manipulation side)
3) Do #3 before your young nieces/nephews in your living room (the performance side)
3) Finally, put all last three together in a regular sounds script/performance
4) Follow your dreams!

P.S. I have not reviewed it yet, but Kimmo is offering a bilabial script in these "Talk to the Hand" lecture notes: http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/jkimmo/Kimmostore.html

Paul Winchell's DVD / VHS is great. He tries to cover "every" aspect of ventriloquism, not just speaking without moving your lips.

Steve Taylor's "Voicing your dummy" is very entertaining, too, but focuses on the "speaking" part of ventriloquism.
He offers other instructional videos which focuses on manipulating or "humoring" (scripting). Right now he has a special offer on his website: "buy the VHS without a case for the special one time price of $10". This is valid for the "voicing" VHS and the "humoring" VHS. Check out his website for more details: http://www.stevetaylorpro.com/ventriloquism.htm

Mark Wade's DVD comes with the new version of the Maher Course. It's good but I like the two mentioned above more.

In my opinion, all 3 are better than the "Talk like a dummy" DVD.

Pete Michaels (http://www.petemichaels.com) offers also some DVDs, but I don't know them.

I recommend not to focus on only a video but to checkout some written instructions, too (e.g. Maher Course, "Ventriloquism: Magic with Your Voice" by George Schindler or "Ventriloquism for the total dummy" by Dan Ritchard and Kathleen Moloney).
