Blocking is when one player on a team tries to keep another player from tackling his team-mate. It's a fairly simple concept. Ok, just kidding, Jak!
What in the world are you talking about? Can you be more specific? Coin magic technique, card magic, stage illusions, what???? |

Blocking is written notation of the movements of performers on stage. It is normally in something called the book along with the lighting and sound cues. this allows the exact lighting/sound cues to match accordingly. After a British Ring IBM, comp one performer claimed that he had been unfairly treated and the techies had mucked up his sound ext. I suggested that each performer had his own book with blocking and cues in the Budget (the British IBM mag).
Unfortunatly the stage manager MR Palfreyman had never heard of one and after research come to the conclusion that no one used them in theatres anymore! HO HO HO! Phillip |

Thank you sir.
That's what I was talking about Doc (I think.) And for the record, my wife is Jak. I'm the Yak part. The "and" is just a conjunction. I'll let it slide this time without blocking you.
Yakworld.

Blocking is when you're on stage simply (or not simply) and that your moving from stage left to stage center.
In other words, it's when you move from one part of the stage to another.
P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if "Q" and "R" were eleminated

I'm an old theater major and also video director. Blocking can take on many shapes: The actors are told where to stand for a certain line or camera shot or special effect; the actors are told to move in a certain direction because of a line, action, camera shot or special effect; the cameras are also blocked by practicing where they are to move within a certain shot or scene.
As for the vocabulary: On stages it's: Stage Left, Stage Right, Stage Center, Upstage, Downstage and variations on those four... also someone could call out: "Audience left or right" meaning you are moving in the direction from the audience's perspective... the other directions are from the actors perspective -- facing the audience. By the way: Upstage means going to the back wall of the theater --- going further away from the audience; Downstage is getting closer to the audience. The term: Upstaging someone comes from actors that move upstage to do actions or lines and this would cause their fellow actors to turn and look at them and therefore now have their backs to the audience. When it comes to cameras in play: It will be camera right or camera left... meaning left and right from the camera's perpective. There will be a test tomorrow. No crib sheets or NWs please. Greg
One of my favorite quotes: "A critic is a legless man who teaches running."

Blocking as with most other theater techniques seems to escape most magicians. The best thing you can do is to find someone who is versed in theater and not in magic and hire them to "block your show" which is where they cover where you walk, stop and work on stage. It will improve how you look to your audience immensley.
