The top five close up magic? Emm... I often see questions like this. Really it does depend on the situation and audience. Its like asking what's the best car? For racing, parking, economy, looks....
My preference is for simple props, spectator involvement and a clean finish. Items like coin uniques, hopping halves, thourght transmitter, ambitious card and rising matchbox provide the items that combined with ability and presentation can entertain and give a Wow factor. Always try and link effects together and stop when the audience still wants more. Anyone agree or disagree? Martin |

Don't be sorry, I believe that you are just telling us that you have recieved great astonishing reactions over time with this effect - which gives you the pleasure of performing it. In other words, you have probably found a presentation that makes this a magical effect. The rest of us could probably learn from that. Do you care to share your presentation of CMH - so that the rest of us can give it a revival? WHat make sit play big for your audience? |

Well basically I go into the solid cant penetrate solid patter, after the first phase I do the let me show you again from the Magicians point of view, and do it that way, 3rd and not always ill place one rubber band on there fingers and one on mine and make it happen then too, I might do a watch steal if possible. If not ill finish the routine with one of the bands melting into the other, too leave only one rubber band on my finger.

Top five effects? Who cares? You may as well ask: 'Who's your favourite magician?
Surely your time would be better spent further developing your performance persona and private personality. As Fred Kaps would say,'The greatest strength of a performer doing say a private party, is his attitude as a private person.' The tricks are basically irrelevant. Sure you should fool people badly and of course entertain them BUT, they should remember the performer FIRST, not the tricks... such an obvious point, but one that a great many magicians today (especially amateurs) seem to be neglecting. If your audience warm to you as an individual, they will certainly warm to your magic, no matter what you do. Often, too much emphasis is put on the tricks themselves. Magicians such as Bob Read, Charlie Edwards, Ken Brooke, Slydini etc., could pick up a handkerchief or a beer mat, and not only fool the hell out of you for ten minutes, but also entertain with their own unique charisma. The audience would recall the tricks to a certain extent, and indeed, respect the individual's skill but, the personality of each performer is what would remain with them. A thousand other performers could be doing a similar trick but, the really astute performer sells the effect by selling HIMSELF! Does this sound patronising? Who cares? |

Steve - Agree with you 100%
Posts that ask for people's favourites are pointless; unless they explain WHY, for example, they are routined together. To just see a list of (in this case) 5 tricks is pretty pointless; although as Joe Riding used to say "if you want to keep someone entertained, ask them to talk about themselves"! |

But WHY are these your favourites?
How do you routine them/present them? Have you improved them? What reaction do you get? To just list 5 tricks is just so bloody pointless! It's like me telling you for breakfast today the 5 things I had were egg, bacon, chips, beans and a cup of tea!!! |
