The best I have used is the unscented Neutrogena hand cream, its Norweigan, but widely available in the UK,its super concentrated and a little goes a long way, keeps my hands moist enough for the sleights, without being tacky. Its good stuff! But if you don't want to smell like a flower shop, make sure you get the unscented version....
Ive upped my standards.Now,up yours!

I use lavender baby oil gel found at the dollar tree. Really makes my hands nice and smooth without that oily feeling with regular baby oil and lotions. Remember just a dab smaller than your pinky will do.

I've had pretty severe dry hands for as long as I can remember. Makes certain tricks difficult or impossible (Bill Malone's "I should have done it myself" being a notable example - even with secret prep move I've never had any luck). I've experiemented with tons of different lotions over the years.
I've had really good luck with Gold Bond lotions that you can get at any CVS or grocery store. Another thing that can work if you apply right before handling is hand sanitizing lotion - for whatever reason that helps a lot of me. Also, if you're hands are consistently dry, one of the best things to do is sleep with a pair of cotton gloves. Just apply your favorite lotion or vaseline before putting on the gloves and you'll feel like you have different hands in the morning. Finally, if you develop fissures, or little cracks that hurt like heck, try dabbing a little superglue on the cut - it will stop hurting immediately and heal very quickly. I've also heard that manicures can help a ton. Adam |

I typically practice with Corn Husker's lotion and what everyone here has said is true--it doesn't last for a particularly long time.
For performances I typically use Golden Touch Lotion. It provides the same level of grip as the Corn Huskers but it will easily last through a performance and it provides a lot of control over the cards.

I have extremely dry hands but have found that a small dab of Nivea cream works well for me. If you use too much, you'll ruin your cards.

I use straight Glycerin. Literally 2 drops on the palm and work in, let set for 10 minutes and you are good to go for about 5 hours. I have tried everything and Glycerin is the greatest for card and coin work.

I am going to give Golden Touch a try. I have heard about it for years and put in an order today.

I've had a problem with very dry hands for many years. Without treatment, cardwork was pretty much next to impossible. Tried a lot of treatments with only "acceptable" results.
Anyway, I recently saw an item at Tannen's called: Manipulation Lotion...something put out by the late Frank Garcia, so decided to give it a try. Great stuff!! This liquid puts a fine coating over the fingers which is non-sticky and has an almost velvety feel to it...close to greasy, but not. Doesn't rub off. Not sure how it works, but card handling/sleights are now a breeze!! Highly recommend it to the "dry hand guys." |

Although I seem to need it less, lately, I use Cornhuskers. It gives the hands a tire-tread grip, when palming cards.

Hi All
Interesting topic! Especially for me as I have really dry hands and tried general moisturisers but they just seem to leave my hands greasy. Anyone know of a product (or products) that can help with dry hands and is available in the UK? Recommendations would be very welcome Ogami |

I've tried a bunch of things and they seem to work for a while. With all of the fears of infection and such, I have been washing my hands a lot which drys them out.
A few things feel greasy at first but after a while it becomes better, it's like magic! I've tried Corn Huskers which works for a while, but needs reapplication fairly quickly. I reccently picked up a jar of "Udderly Smooth" which was originally made for cow udders. It works pretty well too, lasts longer than Corn Huskers. The best results so far are with Bag Balm, which has lanolin in it so feels greasy initially, but this quickly goes away. It lasts the longest and gives me enough grip to handle cards (without some kind of lotion, I can't operate an invisible deck and have difficulty with push offs) and coins easily.

Ahhh Bag balm. I grew up with that stuff. It was originally made for cow udders as well.
In Indiana, Where I grew up, there were dariy farms everywhere. In fact, the first "job" I ever had was milking cows for an old farmer that lived a couple miles up the road. Bag Balm was on the bathroom shelves and in the medicine cabinets of everyone I knew. As was corn huskers lotion. (Which my father swore by incidentally). As for my hands, I use regular old St. Ives. I just don't use it right before handling cards. But it keeps my skin from drying out. I've tried some manipulation lotion made by Hersey's magic that I got through MJM. It works OK. But it seems a little to sticky for me. I'm still searching for a good solution. The Skinners Edge Cream mentioned on the first page of this thread sounds like something I should try. V

Between gigs, I use Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Lotion on my hands. This stuff is great! If you use it just before a gig, use very little, because it can leave the hands a little slick.

I have toyed with a lot of stuff over the years, Skinners edge cream (a variation of the sortkwick formulation. It comes in the same type container also), The Ouellet lotion, regular sortkwick, Vagisil as mentioned somewhere else, but I am starting to like the Golden Touch lotion. Seems to be just the right tack for my hands. The Ouellet Elite Magicians lotion is a close second. Of course if you formulate your own, you may get the right tack for you.
The smell of the New Scent forumula of GT is of a vanilla(ish) smell. Can't speak of the old forumlation. You can't beat the price (Under $10 shipped for a big 8.5oz spray bottle) of the GT lotion not to mention it comes in a travel size also but they were out of it when I bought it. I have 8.5oz to experiment with but so far I like it. I think the bottle will last quite a while. One spray on each hand has worked. AT |

Straight Glycerin!!! No Smell, no greasy feeling, lasts about 3-4 hours. Put three drops on and rub hands together to coat, let dry and then pick up cards/coins in 5-7 minutes.
I heard Ouellett even changed to straight Gycerin and left off the Rosewater and alcohol. The alcohol never made sense either as it drys your hands. Maybe they put in a small amount to help speed up the drying of the glycerin. |
