Kreskin = Legend.
He might be getting on a bit nowdays, but he has done wonders for mentalism. Respect. |

As I've mentioned before, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in playing cards either for playing card games or for mentalism/magic effects. Nonetheless -- and as usual -- I was enthralled while I watched Kreskin perform this card effect. Notice the reaction of the show's host, and especially that of the other guest. Who else in mentalism nowadays elicits such responses as this? Very, very few performers. " ... and this flipped Carson out ..." LOL! A classic Kreskin aside! In boxing, fighters are scored on something called "ring generalship," defined as "taking command and dictating the terms inside the boxing ring." Really, this was a vintage Kreskin performance which could serve as a lesson in "mentalism generalship" for those perceptive enough to learn from it.

Kreskin is king when selling an effect. I remember his show in the seventies how it would take a regular card trick or even one that uses a trick deck and make it into a miracle. It was all presentation. Rarely did he change the handling or put in a new method... it was pure presentation.
He still worked it on Fallon. He turned what some would have presented as a nice card trick into a miracle. Kreskin is still the man. Greg

My favorite part of his 70s shows was his appearances on the afternoon shows: Merv Griffin, Dinah Shore, Virginia Graham and Mike Douglas. He usually had a bit more time to stretch out go through the audience, calling out social security numbers, phone numbers and addresses, and sometimes finishing with Hellstromism.
He was my first exposure to having no clue whether I was witnessing tricks or something completely different. What a great thing to experience. I always felt like he had that nerd thing going, with his large glasses and unique haircut, while at the same time exhibiting all the class in the world. He has a sense of kindness to him, and immediate trust. There are excellent DVDs featuring him. The one from the Friar's Club in NYC is a nice chance to watch him in action for an extended time. It even came with a pendulum and pendulum chart inside the case. I enjoyed the Jimmy Fallon appearance for the same reason as others, the way he sells the effect. The things he says as he's instructing the specs show his years of performing experience. |

I had the pleasure of working with Kreskin when the computer chain Software Etc. opened their largest Superstore in Manhattan -- the PR agency I was with invited Kresin to "read the mind of a computer" as a Grand Opening stunt, and he absolutely blew away the in-store crowd and the media that had gathered slack-jawed. Of course, nobody at that time noticed a quiet guy visiting the same Software Etc store during the Grand Opening, a geek named Bill Gates. All eyes were on Kreskin -- he totally lived up to the legend.

Kreskin still has it! Fallon's people are certainly trying to find the best guests to build ratings for his show. For Kreskin to be around this long in the business and still be relevant is a testimony to his ability as a showman.
Long live Kreskin!! |
