Can anyone give me some info on this? I really want to buy one, but I want some opinions on it first.

Sorry do not own one as yet, but like you, have been thinking of getting one.
If I get one before you then I will let you know how good it is. My nearest supplier is in England and I think it´s quite dear, but could be worth it.

I got it from a reliable source that it is not worth the money.
If you know the effect, you can come up with your own way to accomplish it. |

I own the Musing Box, and I have to tell you that I really like it. It makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up! As with any bizarre effect, presentation is EVERYTHING!

A small wooden box sits on the table in front of you. You tell a very moving tale about joy, loss, sorrow and triumph over tragedy. At the peak of your story, the box begins playing some pretty spooky music!!
The box is opened and shown to be completely empty. Not even a music mechanism. It is more of a seance table effect. I think I paid $80 for it...and must say, not worth the $$$$. But this is only one magicians opinion. Bengi |

Hi,
The secret is revealed in manifestations. I think it works best if you perform sitting down with a small audience around the table. Yours faithfully Dan Kirsch |

My partner and I use it in our production of "The Final Houdini Seance." It is not meant to be an "Oh Wow" piece that leaves people with their chins on the table.
It is, however, a great transition piece that can be used between some psychic demonstrations and the seance itself. Done properly, it always brings a tear to the eye of at least one guest. Dave |

I received one as gift some time ago, and even though I do not use it regularly in my seances (I usually only do original pieces) I have used it several times and I have been impressed with it.
The one negative thing that I will say is that the song "Puff The Magic Dragon" comes with it (I believe that is still the case), and that is simply not the proper song for any seance that I would write. But then again, that is just my opinion. Other than that, I believe that the product itself is well worth the money. It is made very well, and it certainly delivers the effect that it claims. For those that are looking to include a music box into their performances, I would certainly recommend it, especially if you modify the mechanism and change the song. If presented properly, the Musing Box is one of the more breathtaking seance effects on the market. If it is used as a "trick" it is a waste of money. So for what it is worth, those are my thoughts and opinions. Keep the change, Rick Maue |

Tony Andruzzi suggested reversing the tines out of the mechanism, to really freak out the audience when using a music box. Who knows, maybe "Puff the Magic Dragon" played backwards may very well be Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven....

You could accomplish the same effect with a mini digital sound recorder (like the sound gizmo - sold through many dealers) and some really unusual box (antique, unusual shape, unique material).

I have an idea based on how I would do it, it's along the same lines as what you suggest Doug.

Greetings,
The musing box is available from The effect is as strong as your acting ability. The idea of reversing the tines in the music box has never worked particularly well. Modern music box motors just don't fit when reversed. For the Rose Seance, I use a pair of music box motors. Two music boxes at once make a horrific noise which is precisly what I needed. Part of the fun with my humble version is that it is done during the blackout while the person to my left holds the box in their right hand. My motor has a reaching rod on it. By touch the box in the sitters lap, the sound-board effect comes through. The sitter can lift the lid in the darkness and it is quite apparent that the music is coming from the box. TTFN, Sam Haine

When I bought mine, I didn't want "Puff" either as I had a different presentation in mind. Lee had one with "Edelweiss" and that worked fine.

I love the Muse Box... then again, I've not picked up anything from Lee as of yet, that I felt ripped off about... good quality and great ideas!
Ironically I use the Muse Box in my Xmas season shows, telling a tale about my estranged grandfather... in that I love to get people to cry, be it during a reading or a show routine, this bit is right up my alley and kicks serious butt when presented properly. I have created a special holder for the "works" that's essentially a pocket in a T-Shirt so I can do the routine standing or, in my case, whilst sitting on a barstool center stage. It works very well! Now... if I could only find "Tinker Bell" (same basic effect using a brass school bell in which the clapper is missing at the end... saw Chuck Fayne do this years ago @ the Castle and it's killer!)

If anyone is interested in purchasing the Musing Box..I have one that I'm willing to part with. Never been used. Also, have music gimick that was marketed by Steven's Magic. The Steven's item is also unused, but the placement of the gimic is different than the Musing Box.Each of these sold for $80.00 or so.
I've seen Lee do the box and it does have a poerful and emotional impact. Also, Bob Baker's book "Shared Thoughts", has a routine that is also powerful, but a bit more upbeat than the Earle piece. Please contact me by E mail at MAGE928@aol.com if you are interested in these items.I'll let both of them go for a reasonable price that can save you a few bucks at least. Best thoughts, John Smetana |
