Any ideas of how to get a stack of silver dollars? (I guess Eisenhower should be the easiest, right?) I want to start working on coin slight of hand building towards a Miser's Dream routine.

I've gone to a few banks and have been asking around at stores, but no one has seen one in a while.

Suggestions?

I prefer Frank's suggestion in that I want to actually look through the supply they have and get as close a match as possible! I have 2 coin shops in town that just bring out a box full of coins that don't have a collectors value (slicks or culls) and I get to go through em finding the ones that call out to me!

Wish I had a shop around here like that Mick. :/ WOW and this is NYC and it's hard to find places like that. If anyone around here knows of a place like Mick describes here in NYC or even in NJ someplace, please let me know. Thanks guys.

As a matter of fact there's a coin shop downtown @ 125 Maiden Lane in the basement. I was just in there a few weeks ago picking up some culled WL's. (http://www.juleskarpcoinsandbullioninc.com/). The owners a nice guys, you'll find what you're looking for there.

Every time I go into a bank, I always ask if they have any. You'd be surprised...sometimes you get lucky!

Always ask...

Yep, this is the way to go. Actually, last Friday I went to pick up a few soft Walking Liberties and found an almost uncirculated 1940 S Walker with just a tad bit of tarnish... I have no idea why it was in the cheap-o bin (maybe they just look for key dates). Anyways, I bought it for like $6, cleaned off the tarnish (with soap and water) and now it looks like new... literally! ^_^ I could probably sell it on eBay for between $24-$30, but I'd rather keep it since it's such a beauty...

Good Luck,

Can I get in on that deal Kyle Smile The coin shop near me is TERRIBLE. Literally EVERYTHING is just thrown all over the counter and they are selling halves and dollars for $30-$300 each! The serivce isn't the best either. The man at the counter stares at me everytime I go in there and it is weird. He has a gun on his belt too which makes me want to find another coin dealer somewhere near me.

Keep at it with the banks. It took me a while but I found about 15 Kennedy halfs and maybe 7 Eisenhowers.

I pick 'em up at coin dealers at flea markets. And, would you believe, last weekend at a restaurant gig, I got a beautiful 1879 Morgan as a tip! Seriously, no foolin'.

Seriously Dan, you and I are thinking the same thing. I just got Levent's DVD on the Misers Dream. I think I might look into the Nielson Palming coins. They are a bit expensive at 3.5 a piece, but you get twice the load. If you have not seen Leven't DVD yet, you should check it out. Oh.... and back on topic, call around to the coin shops. A coin shop in my town told me they are always getting in Eisenhower $1's because folks are bringing them in. They just throw them in the register. You can pick them up with no markup.

I hope he didn't get home and realize he'd given you his lucky coin THINKING it was a clad and NOT his grandpa's Morgan Smile

As far as clad coins, I can get rolls of clad Kennedy half's at my bank and I'll bet I get one or 2 in change once a week from a 7/11 near my home! I bought a 20 dollar roll of Ike's and Bi Centennial's for $24 at a coin shop!

Nope, we discussed it. He had asked to examine my 4 halves I used. (I just ditched the shell.) He handed them back to me and it was in there. I tried to hand it back and he said no, you keep it. I told him how rare these are and he said, "Yeah, I know, I have a few more though." I was a bit worried he was a coin expert and might notice that the halves were cut down, (Dean's set)

I got Levent's DVDs at NEMCON last weekend. It was great to attend his lecture and talk with him a little. The DVDs are pretty amazing. I've watched all 5+ hours -- incredibly thorough.

Just a few years back I went to the Greek Isles Casino in Vegas to see the "World's Greatest Magic Show". As I walked by the casino I noticed that the dollar slots were paying out in actual Eisenhower coins! I can only guess that this was probably because the casino was too cheap to have custom dollar tokens and found it more economical to use dollar coins. So I put a $20 bill in the slot machine and hit the payout button. I didn't want to carry more than 20 coins in my pocket so I stopped there. But I do have a friend who likes to gamble and everytime he went to Vegas he stopped by the Greek Isles and pick me up some dollar coins. Also some casinos payout real Kennedy halves on the fifty cent slots. So that was a source for my halves as well.

I don't know if the Greek isles is still open or not. But if you know somebody who is going to Vegas you might want to look into this.

Keep asking every time you go to the bank. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

I get most of mine at coin shops, some at antique stores, and occasionally eBay.

I was at a coin shop in Phoenix today and they had a tub full of Ike dollars for $1.25 each. I have a 64 Kennedy shell that has been sitting on the shelf for 29 years, so I took it in and got silver Kennedys that match up beautifully. The owner was very helpful in letting me look at numerous halves so I could match them up.
If you want to ask them about Ikes, here's some contact info. I'm sure they would be willing to ship them.
