Hey all, I'm having a hard time getting my cards to fan evenly, I'm not sure if I'm holding the card to deep, or not putting enough pressure on them, but I'm not doing something right. They fan in clumps, and like to fall out in the middle. I think its my grip. Any tips would be helpful. Also I have a Svengali deck that stick together, would fanning powder help this? Thanks.

Whuh, you don't want to use your gimmicked decks for fanning, you say Svengali but I think you mean Invisible deck if it is rough and smooth... you DEFINITELY aren't going to get an even fan with those! haha
Basically just use some new cards (buy a new bicycle deck or Bee deck it should work fine) and it will fan much more evenly, you can also try fanning powder. Finally, as a LAST RESORT, only if nothing else works, then try practicing. |

The Svengali deck may be fanning poorly because many of these decks are cut badly to produce the long/short. Pinching the edge of the card between your thumbnail and first fingernail and running the card around all four edges may help. Fanning powder will definitely help. If you are looking to fan normal decks first decide if you want to learn a thumb fan or pressure fan. A thumb fan is only possible with good, clean cards or those that have been powdered whereas a pressure fan is good for most other decks. Your best bet is to learn both but the pressure fan is more difficult to learn. Which fan are you attempting?

NO I'm not trying to fan a Svengali deck, I have a old Svengali deck that sticks when used like it should be... I have problems fanning normal cards I think I'm choking up on them to much or not putting enough pressure on them..HELP

In my post above I asked if you were trying to thumb fan or pressure fan. They are two different techniques requiring different explanations.

Ah sorry I didn't finish reading the whole post...I have problems with them both but I am better at the pressure fan, The thumb fan just doesn't spread evenly and they want to fall out of my hand in the middle.... they always seem to hit the bottom of my thumb and if I adjust so they don't they spring out of my hand.... I SUCK and sorry to waste every ones time with questions about basic fans, but if there is any place to get a good answer its here!!
Thanks |

Hang out in a magic shop for a few afternoons. Nothing like face-to-face tutoring. Even if the demonstrator is busy, there will be a handful of teenage boys who can't drive but can flourish the pips off the cards. They would be thrilled to help.
Also, Hank Lee's Magic Conclave is in Cape Cod on April 17-19. -Daniel |

It would be an huge investment for you to buy fanning powder. Whether or not you can get hold of some, still...practice, practice, practice.
Here's a little article on fanning powder...http://superhandz.yuku.com/topic/2520/t/PRO-TIPS-Fanning-Powder.html |

Buy XB1, Jerry the Flourishman has a whole section on fanning in this 2 dvd set. He is the best in the world in constructing card fans and the instruction is top notch! But in the long run you cant go without practicing. A good pressure fan can take months of practice!!!
