I was reading the posts in this forum about the hardware that everyone is using to play music in their shows. It got me thinking and wondering. How do you use music in your shows? I am sure different folks use it in different ways. Do you have it playing softly in the background during your entire show? Do you use it to accent the conclusion of an effect or to introduce and effect? I am currently designing and building a show and I don't know very much about utilizing music in a birthday party show, so any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve |

Steve,
Most of the time I use music during preshow setup and postshow tear down. I also use vocal announcements during these times. I use a taped introduction too, and taped bits (sound effects, audience chasers, etc.) throughout my shows. I have worked very hard to create openers and closers for my shows that are choreographed to music, and one of each are most always included. For birthday party shows I generally go a little lighter with the above descriptions, plus I will usually take less audio equipment....according to the size of the venue and crowd. Regan

I don't play music during setup and tear down, as it keeps the kids around waiting for more. I set up either before the party, or while they are doing another activity, never will I set up in front of them.
I use music for my opener during my family shows, or for a childrens show, my opener changes a bit and is in the middle of the show. I also use it for one other routine (diminishing cards). There is also the Axtel Art-O-Matic which has its own music included.

You asked about Music at birthday shows. I use a number of clips during a show. At the beginning I use a prerecorded intro to get everyone's attention. Then I have a warm-up trick where I have music in the background that I talk over. Following this, my opening routine is choreographed to music so that the magic takes place on the musical "hits". The same routine done without music is much less impressive.
I use music during a miser's dream sequence, The Thing, and as an intro to a puppet skit. Finally, I have a half dozen songs that play while I make balloon creations. The music adds texture to the show. I wouldn't want music playing the entire time, but in the right places it fills out the show, sets the mood and makes even a birthday party in a living room seem more theatrical. It doesn't need to be very high-tech either. For years I used a Sony CD player with a remote. This allowed me to start and stop tracks as needed without going over to the unit to do this.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. It is helping me greatly. I better understand how music can enhance the percieved theatricality and professionalism of what I offer which in turn enhances the percieved value to my customers.
I've done a lot of birthday parties in the past, but I am building a new show from the ground up. It sure is a challenge (albeit a fun challenge) to start with a blank canvas. |

I use a lot of music during my show. I use it to emphasize the climax of a trick (e.g. I use a 'tada' type of clip for the restoration of my paper tear...and a high powered song when I start to pull a mouth coil out of the birthday child's hand. I also have a very sentimental piece of music that I use to underscore a 'memory' bit that I created.
I play music before the show to get the kids into the mood. I will be modifying that a bit soon to include some current artists like Miley Cyrus and the Jonas brothers. |

Using pop songs by current artists for a magic show without getting permission from the publisher/composer breaks copyright laws. Sure, people can get away with it, but it is no different than stealing someone else's magic routine and calling it your own. There are tons of recordings available now for magicians that are royalty free recordings that eliminate the need to use other artists' music without permission. I know there are a lot of people who don't give a hoot about this, but it is just plain wrong.

I've never used music at shows - I've always seen it as one more thing that can go wrong. I've watched so many acts grind to a halt because the music doesn't come on at the right time - it's amazing how often this seems to happen.

I use music as the kids are ariving, then use my Jimbo Theme Tune while I get them to sit down. I use music a lot in the second half for the games, then again at the end I have a Jimbo Play off.

Kimmo,
Music can have problems, but it add so much texture to a show (for me anyway) Plus if it is background, mood-setting music, its not critical to the show. However, the original question was asking about music during a birthday party. I've had problems with music at a birthday party. But it doesn't have to grind the show to a halt. Birthday's a bit more loose anyway, so a glitch is easy to work through. Nevertheless, it's entirely up to the performing style. You have fantastic energy during your show, and really don't need music. I still believe that, if done right, it adds a tremendous amount to a show. Imagine your favorite movie without the music. Those energetic chase scenes would be fun, but much of the excitement would be missing.

I use music a lot in all my shows. If you want to see how powerfully music can add to shows, buy some of Ken Scott's DVDs. His birthday show dvd and his library show dvd in particular.

I use music to warm up, as an intro for the sudience. Then I use it in my opening routine. I use a Bose speaker system with an I-pod. It delivers power even in the biggest of venues.

Until now I had been using one piece of music for my opener (a modified Dwayne Laflin multiple TT silk vanish that ends in a Happy BIrthday silk) and occasionally other music for setup and breakdown if I was performing the party at a community center or other large room. But not for the typical living room/playroom party.
But after attending the Kapital Kidvention in the DC area last week and hearing Arthur Stead's lecture (and buying some royalty-free music from him) I've been thinking about including more in my birthday show. Most of the music seems geared for larger performances, there's not a lot of time between picking a volunteer and having the volunteer next to me. But I'm looking at using some brief clips such as a flourish when I greet each volunteer and say his/her name. Possibly also for an affect that has a good deal of build up. I'm a bit concerned that the music will take away the spontaneity of the show and the verbal silliness. We'll see. I'm also concerned, as noted by others, that this is just one more thing that could go wrong, go wrong, go wrong ... |

Are there any updates for the MP3 tech or is there anything else out there that works better? As sometimes I play the track it won't work.

I currently do all my own music, live, during the show. I play the concertina as a warm-up, some comedy bits with that. I also accompany a lot of the routines with my kazoo. I have considered some recorded music for a couple of new things I want to add, but I too have some concern about technical snafu's.

I sell CDs with Openers, Closers, Funny announcements and sound effects that many magicians use in their shows. Might be worth checking out. I can even customize them iwth your performance name. I just released the 2nd volume as well. Let me know if you have any questions.

I've just started to add more music to my show and games!
I had a great responce to my water trick when I played some "mood" music behind it. The children really focused. I use a Roland sp 404 sampler to trigger all the music and effects, Thanks Colonel Custard for that idea!
