It's a clip about 10 minutes long.. can anyone help? Someone must know.. The link was here on the Café, on one of the threads for the half dyed silk routine.. but so far - I can't locate it again. Billy was a true master. I have watched him literally hundreds of times, and still laugh and enjoy it each time. Most good magic acts, if I have seen them once or twice, I don't particularly care if I see them again. Great acts, I could watch several more times. But there are very few performers that I could watch a hundred times and still enjoy.
Billy was one of the hardest working, most professional, and entertaining magicians I have ever seen. He made it look easy. But his timing, character and the relationships among the audience, himself, and his work were all carefully worked out. Even at 84, he still audio-taped every show, and listened to the entire tape before going to bed that same evening--in case someone in the audience said something new, he adlibbed a good line and wanted to save it, or found a better way to say a line. He spent years and thousands of hours of intense work to make everything look that effortless. |

You are right Whit! Not too long before he died, he did an interview with the MM (The other MM: Max Maven!) I believe in Geniii Magazine (not sure?) and his remarks about being a professional and the changing face of Show Business are some of the most accurate statements I've ever read. he was one of a kind!

I met Billy at the Magic Castle. One of the truly nicest people in Magic I have ever met.
He was performing in the Palace and did his half-died hank. I fell in love with that routine! |

Thank you so much for posting this! I actually just received this from Abbott's and it came with 11 pages of instructions, written by Billy himself. At first I couldn't believe how it could possibly take 11 full pages to explain this, but Billy left nothing out, and I appreciated knowing the history (and controversy) of the half dyed silk. Not only did he explain in great detail how the trick works, but he gave me a history lesson behind it, and that's so rare. I can't count the number of effects I've bought that come with poorly written misspelled directions and terribly drawn pictures to illustrate what's supposed to happen. Billy purposefully leaves out the pictures because he knows there are people like me who take a look at the drawings and never bother to read and understand the trick. Drove me a bit crazy since I'm a very visual learner, but now with the help of this footage I think I'm in good shape, and I certainly appreciate the time and effort he put into this. He leaves nothing out - a true gem. I'm only sorry I never got to see it performed live by Billy himself.
