In my expereince, the audience will place no more importance on the type, age or beauty of a coin than you do. To perform a series of effects with an special coin can be artistic and 'precious' and enable you to connect with the audience. If you borrow a quarter -- "any quarter" no one will notice if it strangly morphs into a modern "State" one or a worn one or an older silver one -- unless you make an issue over it.
For me, any unique coin carries a hint of 'gimmicked' in the mind of some spectators, requiring that it be examined. My 'bias' may be what makes them suspicious too. So, I use a finger ring instead ;-)

I use both Kennedys and Walking Liberties, and as long as you point out what the coins are, you're fine.
Coin type can always be handled with proper scripting! Get whichever type is the most beautiful to you! |

The only time I was ever asked about walking liberties was from a guy that was not from our country.
