Anyone got any suggestions on performing at night where there are few street lights around?
There's a great place here that I'd like to turn into a pitch, but it's too bloody dark! Their IS ambient light, just not enough, really... OH! for the day when LED's come into their own!

Yea, get your own street lamp.
Last summer I used a battery inverter I bought at Wal-Mart for about $100. I plug in a floor lamp I got at Wal-Mart for $20. Use florescent - I can run two 9 watt florescents for about 3 hours. I tied the lamp to my suitcase table so it wouldn't get knocked over. I think I can dig up a picture: http://joejoeonline.com/blogger/uploaded......5535.jpg This year, I'm trying to rig a street lamp that will fit into my rig - I downsized to a 4-cylinder car due to gas prices, so I don't have the same trunk space. -JoeJoe

We performed under a street lamp. But when it gets dark it becomes harder to see props. Things start to blend together. Not only that, be I noticed people squinting due to the glare of the street lamp. So we generally packed it in once it got too dark.

It is good that they are battery powered. I think they are worth investing in for a half circle crowd as long as you can control the crowd to stand behind the light. But a sidewalk crowd might come to close blocking the light, leaving shadows on the table. Another thing important is to have a stand for the lights, especially for sidewalk crowds so the light will point down on top of the table.

Hey Gaddy, just curious, have you come up with a solution yet? We run into the same problem , as well, every now and then. I´d kind of given up on it. It´d be interesting to know if you´ve worked it out.
Those LED lamps look pretty good. I played around with LED´s about a year ago, but didn´t get the intensity or the `wash´ out of them. They shined pretty small areas. But, the are/have developed. I was playing with the idea of actually taking a replica street-lamp with. Using a 12v auto battery in the base (good anchor weight). And actually incorporating it in the show.,... still playing with the idea. hey JoeJoe, man you really light up the town! Great,...amazing how much those florescents give! looking for the spotlight, gallagher |

I saw riki "toot" palmer use a higher powered flashlight as a spotlight. if your a travelling performer, like riki is, a huge light setup isn't practical. his light was sufficent enough.
if you are to be playing in the dark. use it to your advantage! wear all black and use white props. even thread work can be wow'ing. I'm amazed how far black clothes, along with just a white hanky and a white ball can go........ |

Probably not at that sort of wattage...
PS- the link you sent was for a system costing 300$ + not including the solar panel...

They work great for things like stop lights and signs, because they don't need to light anything up. The technology is getting better, but none-the-less I would prefer fluorescent as low-powered battery lights. -JoeJoe

LEDs are incredibly bright lights. Brighter than any other bulb. Have you ever seen a flashlight with five LEDs? They will blind you.

I also think that light is cool, especially with a rechargeable battery. Very nice. But beware that it won't "throw" the light beam very far. LED has no "umph" (hope I'm not being overly technical for you guys, lol), and it has no reflectors, either, to help magnify and focus the light. It's designed to work inside a very small & enclosed space (an engine compartment or trunk space) without blinding the auto mechanic or throw off too much heat.
Again, I like it a lot, but you gotta test it out before committing. |

That is why they are not used to replace light bulbs ... at least, not yet. They are getting better. I think they might work as a foot light in addition to other lighting. And certainly better than nothing. -JoeJoe
