I can't remember either...These are all reproduced from the Carl Hammer book..Mines in Florida, and there are errors in the Hammer book, However, you get a better view of the Banner and can somtimes see the artists name in the Plate, I 'll guess on the Roonga...Similiar to David Wyatt, but I believe the Graphics are to detailed for him...Sooooo, Jack Sigler?.....

Not a clue on that Roonga one. Looked more like a 'Pulp' magazine cover Illustration. I have a hard time remembering who's who anyway of those elder statesmen.
These day's, Hiner does some pretty detailed Illustration style on occasion, or at least 'did'. You know I might have that book someplace buried. I'll see if I can pull it out.

Renton's style from what I've seen is pretty primitive and maybe not as polished as some others...Kind of cool though in a Grandma Moses kind of way...was good at lettering as were most of these guys... not all were skilled Artists AND Letterers like Meah though (I think Johnny's Lettering is beyond the best.).
The thing about ALL these Banner painters though is they had Buckets Of CHARM. 'Freaks, Geeks and Strange Women'...don't have that book.

Freaks Geeks and Strange Women is a MUST!!! Doug it is way way better than the Hammer book! What a lot of people don't know is that a lot of the old sideshow banner painters didn't letter the banners. They painted the pictorials and someone else in the shop did the lettering. I don't think it was because they were not able to but because there were so many banners to be painted and as you know the idea of the banners was to get them done quickly. As for Renton, as you know he was a showman who did paint some banners for his shows. They were very childlike and rather BAD! I am not sure why he painted them himself but he did copy a lot of imagery for his wild woman geek show from Snap Wyatt and Fred Johnson!
