OK, I admit it. I am a technology laggard when it comes to gaming consoles. The last gaming console I bought was a Sega Genesis system. Used. I have tried playing some of these systems, and the Playstation and Xbox controllers seem too complex. "No, dad, you press the X and the blue buttons while holding down the left trigger and turning the right joystick..." Huh? From what I have seen, the WII is the easiest to control. Does this match your experience?
I know that you are supposed to find the games you want to play, and then buy the console to play them. However, I haven't seen a great deal of variation between the games. The WII seems to be more geared towards games that take advantage of the motion sensor thing, but it seems the most popular games are licensed for all of the consoles so does it really make that much difference anymore? We are also looking to get a Blu-ray player to augment our DVD player, so if I could combine it with a gaming console, then that may be preferred. The WII does not play Blu-ray, the Playstation does. Info is contradictory on whether or not the Xbox does or not. Any insights into this? Is it worth it to use the gaming console as a DVD player or are you better off buying a separate player? It's funny, but I design global networks but get confused when dealing with a gaming system. I appreciate any advice and insights you can give me. Thanks Dan

Finally, a question I can answer. First, the xbox does NOT play blue ray. About a year ago they released an add on for 100 bucks, that would allow you to watch HD DVD's, then blue ray won out in that competition.... As far as the controller thing with hitting all different buttons, I can certainly understand. I bet you were playing some type of one v one game, where you can triple pile drive body slam someone into a 7 foot long spike. These games are built upon special moves requiring confusing button combos.
What games do you have an interest in? That is certainly a consideration. I view the three like this: ps3, the best, a blue ray + the best graphics out there, with a built in wireless receiver so youo can get online without all the cables (xbox has this ability for sale). Xbox 360, many of the same games as ps3 (although both sony and microsoft release their own games. Halo for xbox is only available for xbox for example), and a better online "community". ( I have both systems, and play several games on their online networks. The ps3 people are generally older, whereas the xbox is mainly teenagers) and you have to pay 50 a year for the online, ps3 nothing. ( sorry mike for ripping your system, now its time to step it up!!! AND steve brooks plays a xbox 360...) The xbox has recently had many problems, the biggest being the "red ring of death", microsoft got sued and it came out they knew they would have this issue.... And finally, the wii. Its a great console, fun to play with several people. Graphics aren't close to the other two, although many of the games are well designed. It is fun to hit a home run by swinging your arm, but not for an hour...For the wii you can get the wii fit (which is like a touch pad for various games, yoga ect.), a skateboard type thing, severals "guns" to place the controller in for shooting games. I tend to play longer games with hours long single player campaigns and a lot of multiplayer, so I cant imagine doing that with a wii. Of course, the way I rated the is in totally reverse proportion to their cost... I might think of more in a bit. sorry if I didn't make sense...

The Wii is great for casual gamers and party games- and fun to play with the family. Real hard-core gamers have their own specialty system- it's called a PC.
I might look into a PS3 if I ever upgrade to Blu-ray, but for me, it's way too overpriced for just a game console.

Casual gamer is exactly how I would describe myself. I get bored with video games and would only play for 30 minutes or so at at time. If I have to spend those 30 minutes just learning how to use the controller then I wouldn't ever play. My oldest son has the Xbox and we played some multiplayer shooter game. My role was primarily as a Target while I spun in circles...
The Wii sounds like maybe what I need to look at.

What shooter? I understand about being a target. If you play online, remember that the people you are playing against play all day, and know the levels like the back of their hand.. You get used to it. There is a learning curve.

The last one I got was called 'Pong'. It comes with two sticks attached to high tech wire which causes the wedge to move and you hit the light back and forth like a high tech ping pong game. It had an option to play a version of hockey and also, this was in the advanced game, one where the light hits into blocks and if you break through it gets wild!

I'm pretty much a game junky. I had an x-box 360 and a PS3. I sold the xbox and kept my PS3. I also have a PSP and a Nintendo DS. I'm thinking about a wii very seriously because it looks like fun and I've heard quite a few good things. (Wii fit being one of them). Which one would I take if I had to choose? The PS3 hands down.
I was waiting (a few years back) for the next generation of consoles to hit the market and the 360 was first. I never had an x-box before. I had a PS2 and I loved it. But I thought "What the heck". So I bought a 360 mainly because there were a few exclusive titles on the 360 that I wanted to try. I really wasn't that impressed with the console. The first thing that you notice is the brick sized power supply that you have to find a place to stuff. The thing runs hot enough to roast a marshmallow over. No blu ray. The graphics on the 360 are OK I guess. But they just don't hold a candle to the PS3. In fact the x-box holds back the power of the PS3 when it comes to multi-system titles. Check out PS3 exclusive titles to see the difference in graphics. (Killzone 2, RE5 ect.) There are a lot of reasons why I didn't like the x-box but when it comes right down to it, Most of the games that are put out today are for multi system. (Again, Bad for the PS3 as far as graphics go). And x-box only has a few titles that are exclusive to it that I was interested in. (Fable, Gears of war). And lets not forget about Microsoft's poor QC and the whole "Red ring of death" syndrome. Now a fun thing to talk about with this system is "Backwards compatibity". In other words, being able to play the older X-box titles on th 360. I of course had a few games in mind that I wanted to play from the old x-box, so when I got my 360, I picked them up. This experience taught me what the term "Software emulation" means. Quickly, Its basicly software that emulates the hardware of the old X-box so that the older x-box games can be played on the new system. Well, To play the old games you had to be able to get online to basicly download a patch that allowed the game to run. Each game in the x-box library had a different patch. And sometimes you had to wait for the big brains at Microsoft to get around to creating a patch so that you could play your game. After you did, Sometimes the game would hardly run and suffered from a multitude of different glitches. Just bad all around. The PS3 uses Blu-ray and is a Blu-ray player. (As far as reveiws go the PS3 is still one of the BEST Blu-ray players avalable on the market today). A big plus for me as I have a high-def TV and blu-ray is wonderful. This is one of the things that put the x-box positively in the last generation before it even came out. PS3's exclusive game line up is second to none in my opinion. (God of war, Killzone, Uncharted, Metal gear solid, Just to name a few). Anyway, this post is way to long already. If anyone wants to talk games or ask me questions, please feel free to PM me.

I played wii bowling for the first time a couple weeks ago with 3 other people and it was fun. I only like sports games and short games because I don't have all day (or all Night) to play a game.
Is guitar hero available for the wii? If so then that's what I will get if I get a console, if not, I'll stick with my computer. |

I have a PS3 and highly recommend it. Clearly the best part is that it is a great blu-ray player-we use ours more for movies than playing. I don't know about other consoles, but PS3 does get software updates every now and then so you get new features every once in a while. The FullHD games are pretty mindboggling as well.
Some people don't like the fact that PS3 is not able to put out bitstream audio thru HDMI (as far as I know, that's a hardware thing), but the only real difference is that the console encodes DTS Master Audio and not the amplifier...but you cant tell the difference anyhow.

You can't really go wrong with a PS3 if you are looking for a blu-ray player. Just remember that to take full advantage of blu-ray you need to have an HDTV. You didn't mention if you did or not Slartibartfast.
To answer one of your other questions. No, The Wii is not a Blu-ray player. As far as buying a seperate Blu-ray player or a game console, It really depends on what you want and what you expect from your player. And, Of course, how much you want to spend. Caution must be taken when buying a stand-alone Blu-ray player. Some of the cheaper models have long load times and do a bad job of upconverting DVD video into full 1080P HD, Or don't even include a DVD upconverter. The load times on the PS3 are very fast due to the PS3's processer speed. Please research a little before you buy. Here is a good place to start: http://www.cnet.com Just click on "Reveiws" and type "Blu-ray player" or "PS3" into the search box. They have a lot of great reveiws and as far as I can tell are on the money. I bought a 50" Panasonic TH-50PZ850u Plasma TV a little while back and while I was searching and shopping around they were a great resource. Lots of info.

Not only is Guitar Hero available for the Wii- but Guitar Hero World Tour is, too. You don't just get guitar, you get the whole band.

While I've never played a game thingy my old company made parts for 'em and has a gaming division. The only system that I heard had technical problems (over heating) was the XBox and they had two assembly locations with the one in Europe having the better quality but they then moved all the assembly to the location with lower quality output.
I'd like a game thingy but when I try to play one with my nephews they won't let me touch the controller. |

We have a PS3 for Blu-Ray DVDs and a Wii for gaming. The PS3 was less expensive and better-rated than any other Blu-Ray players, and can also play games if we ever need it. The Wii, in my limited experience, is the best gaming system, hands-down.

Oh that's another thing... I love RPG's (Final fantasy, Oblivion), Platformers (Prince of Persia, God of war) and games with great stories. The PS3 has these kinds of games in spades. So it depends what kind of gaming your into.
The Wii has more sports games and such (For right now) but it does have a few games that I would like (Zelda and the like). And some of the games about to be released look really good to me. Wii sounds like an all around fun console. I've never heard anyone who has one say they didn't like it. If you looking for cutting edge graphics, Game diversity, And just plain some of the best games on the market, (Games are another art-form in and of themselves), And one of the best Blu-ray players on the market, Then I recommend the PS3. But like I said, I'm probably going to get a Wii myself. It just looks like fun and I'm sure my son would love it.

For family fun that can involve everyone, nothing beats the Wii. However, if you like mature FPS like Bioshock, FEAR 2, Half-Life 2, then PS3 is the champ. I love the fact that I have it hooked up to Sony 40" HDTV with a comfortable couch in front. Beats seating at my PC desk with its 19" LCD monitor, playing similar games.

The PS3 also plays standard DVD's as well, not only Blu-Ray. Months of research and talking to owners of all available, PS3 is the choice.

Tim, killzone is awesome. Some of my friends worked on it at Sony, and I heard about it for six month.. "this game is amazing", etc.. Graphics are incredible. I am not a fan of the controls (I like Call of Duty 4), but overall it's a great game.
I can't wait for gran turismo 5 this Christmas!

Thanks for the tip...will definitely give Killzone 2 a try.
BTW, the PS3 does a very nice job "upscaling" the quality of standard DVDs |
