A lot of times here on the Café I see things for review and the beginning goes "I am not a friend of the creator but have recieved a copy to review but because of this my review is not biased"
Is there some kind of list of potential reviewers or a way to establish yourself as a reviewer? The reason is I am unemployed and have been trying to find a job and cash is really tight but I would like to learn some new magic and try out new products. Also with all this free time it would give me something to do. Also I love writing as I was an English and Communications major and have written for a magazine here locally and used to review videos for a couple newsletters a few years ago so it is something I really like doing. If anyone has any pointers please let me know. Chris I was wondering the best way to kind of get into reviewing things.
Thanks,

Just some info on how I go about doing things.Maybe it will help in some way
As a creator I do send and discuss my work with people I can trust such as Greg Arce, Sean Waters and Bill Palmer. Their feedback to me is a review of sorts and from there I rework certain areas to make the effect more "user friendly" When the product is complete a proper demo is shot. Here again the "close friends" review it to see if there are giveaways and/or misleading parts. Now comes the part you're interested in: I offer out 5 review copies to "trusted names on the Café". I look for a reviewer who doesn't have an axe to grind or an affliation to some big company who is readying up or has launched a competing product. You may or may not know that there is an awful lot of policking behind the scenes. There is a "boys club" of creators and fan boys who will slander any competition. As a creator that is the last thing I want to encounter (again) as a lot of time an investment has gone into it. If you want to establish yourself as a reviewer I suggest you : --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. get a blog as well as sign up to the major forums where product reviews are welcome. 2. Design a template with a rating system.Something that is well structured with the required headings 3. Be careful about accidentally tipping the method. You wont believe what some reviews givaway. 4. Review after actual real world performances. 5. Get intouch with the creator if anything is unclear 6. Quotes from a spectator after witnessing the effect would be such a great addition. 7. Stay incorruptable. I hope this helps in some way. I look forward to submitting an effect for review in near future. Best Mac. |

I would suggest focus on getting a job. Once you are secure then worry about magic.
I understand times are really tough in the USA right now. Taiwan went through a really bad recession after the big earthquake here. It's easy to look to fantasy type opportunities but a weekly paycheck is the solution. James Quote: On 2009-04-09 00:57, chrusa wrote:

Agreeing with James, concentrate on a job first and not in sitting at home learning and reviewing magic which won't make you any money. Magic isn't going to go anywhere so take some time off of magic and concentrate on the essentials and more important things in life.
Good luck and best wishes, JJ |

Good writing is definitely a marketable skill. While you're job-hunting (and even after you've found a job), you might be able to make some extra cash freelance writing.
