I've been hired to perform two children's magic shows in Iqaluit later this week, for their Spring Festival. Anyone have any experience performing for the Inuit? Theirs is a culture I'm not familiar with, and I'm wondering how they react to entertainers in general and magicians in particular.
Thanks in advance, Todd

Its in Nunavut. I was asked to perform there a few months back, couldn't due to scheduling but talked to a friend who worked up there and said the people are VERY appreciative and extremely friendly. I'm sure you'll love it!

HiTodsky,
I performed there a few years back and gave more details about it in your thread in the Canadian forum. Iqaluit is the capital of Nunavut (formely part of the Northwest Territories) and is on Baffin Island. It used to be called Frobisher's Bay and lies just south of the Arctic Circle. Enjoy the trip! |

Did this gig as well.
I also added a comment to your other thread like Rob. Have fun! |

Curious to know (mike, MB et al), do the gigs up there pay relatively well in relation to shows back home... or did your do it (mostly) for the adventure and cultural experience?

Hey Jonathon,
It depends on the contract you get and who you are working for. Some are paid the full amount and make money. Others will trade off part of the expenses for the experience. The most expensive part of this gig is the airfare. Accomodations are relatively expensive as well. A weekend's expenses start in the $1500.00 to $2000.00 range. Add your fee to that and you now have a contract for $2500.00 to $3000.00 to do 1 or 2 shows. My personal experience was break even. It didn't cost me anything, but I didn't make anything. So I guess you can say it was an all expenses paid trip. (I would have made money, but I loved those carvings and paintings!) |

When I was contacted for this I only had to worry about my fee. I regretted on this one.

Nope, as I said I regretted on this event, as I had other bookings here in town.
As a note, from the way it was presented to me I was only requested to quote my show/time fee. B

This is the most remote place I've ever been booked for a gig. I'm very excited about the experience, and I will also be getting paid enough to justify giving up a weekend of bookings.
Okay, this is probably my last post until after I get back, because I leave tomorrow morning at 6 am. I'll report back next week. Cheers! Todd
