Years ago I remember reading in a magic marketing course about faking a newspaper article about yourself. There's a company out there that will print these fake articles about you so you can use these tear sheets to trick possible clients into thinking the article actually appeared in a real publication.
I always thought this marketing method was sleezy and unethical. What are your thoughts on this? |

Hi Gerry -
If you are making them to create false show experience / false sales evidence, then I agree that it is unethical. Just like creating fake testimonials. However, the newspaper article generators can be used for a business in other ways, not for that specific purpose. - Donald

Too, not sure who suggested such a thing... none of the course I have say to do what you described.
There are 'advertorials" and other ethical ideas, but NOT what you described that I am familiar with. Now I have SEEN folks TWIST what the good, ethical marketers recommend into what you suggested even though that is NOT what they originally recommended in the first place... are you sure? Just asking for clarification.

I've used sales letters, testimonials, photos etc and made them to look like and read like an article.
You can even get them printed on news stock. But I wouldn't suggest having anyone make up the copy in your promo.

The version of this that I've done has a couple elements
to it that make it clear it's a joke: -- the tearsheet is sent to a specific person. -- the article is personalized and written about the targeted individual. -- the article comes from a totally fictional publication. -- the copy of the article is sooooo over the top that it's clearly meant in fun. I've cut this out and sent it in a cheap picture frame (available from the dollar stores), which makes it look special. In this kind of context, I think this approach is totally okay to present as a lead generation tool. --J

Everything that Jack suggested is DIFFERENT than what was originally posted and asked-about as a question.
NONE of the ideas offered to date are intended to pull the wool over anyone’s eye as if it was some kind of REAL article for the sake of misleading anyone... What Jack, Donald, Robert and I are all talking about are killer (well proven) tools for generating interest, leads and as a fun marketing tool, or gifts NOT intended (as originally asked about) to make anyone think that the promo is REAL Article... THAT is lying! (and again NOT ever “probably” what the original marketer intended anyway… THIS is NOT a new idea by a long-shot.) What WE (Jack, Robert & I, so far anyway…) are talking about is fun, engaging, interesting and effective marketing! (with-out going into in to massive detail here.) It sounds like what you are asking is DIFFERENT that what WE are referring to, but again, my "guess" is that this is really what you want and just misunderstood what the marketer was getting at in the first place. (This also happens occasionally in my coaching experience. Folks come to me and ask this very question) But I am still “guessing” till you have a chance to respond to my questions and observations. Looking forward to more clarity and information, Dean <><

I have Eric Paul's version of the "fake article". Looks good but not sure I would use it either.

AGAIN,
TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS. The one Eric (and others I know of…) all recommend using a “Obviously FAKE” article designed to get a laugh and raise some obvious attention and NOT try and “trick” anyone into thinking it is some kind-of REAL publication as asked about in the original question and post… JUST to be clear. HERE, again is what Gerry posted: Quote:

There's a company out there that will print these fake articles about you so you can use these tear sheets to trick possible clients into thinking the article actually appeared in a real publication. TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ideas and suggestions. As far as I know (and I have most, if not all of Eric’s stuff) does NOT suggest trying to trick anyone into thinking that you can pass a fun ‘marketing piece’ off as a real, published article in a real paper or magazine… it is always designed to be OBVIOUSLY Fake and FUN… even FUNNY and often featuring THEM (your Buyer) in the so-called article spoof. Re-Read what was suggested in your marketing course. I could be wrong and it is fine to disagree, but let’s at-least be sure the facts (as soon as Gerry gets back to the table here…) rather that what we THINK we read… Okey Dokey? Again, I can only speak to what I have personally seen and experienced. NOT making anyone else wrong… just trying to be clear and asking for more answers so we can dicuss what is real… what-ever that may turn out to be. Fair? Thanks! NEAL:
OR... are you TRYING to pass off the article as if it WAS real with NO disclaimer or obvious spoof or funny slant to it? After seeing the “Fake Disney VIDEO” on the bottom your home-page site is kinda like that... with NO disclaimer other that that folks can send a copy to their friends? Is THAT what you meant Neale? Again Just ASKING for clarification. I am at your service and In HIS Service, Dean <><

I see nothing wrong with what Jack is suggesting. If the article is so over the top that no one could take the spoof article as being serious, then personally I see no harm in this.
Maybe I need to re-read that book again. I'm still wondering, though, if others have used that "idea" and twisted it around so that the articles appeared to be a legit newspaper article about their shows. |

Anything sent in jest, as an obvious joke, well lets not discuss ethics as it seems as if it would not apply in the first place.
Making up a fake article, well please it is obviously wrong, I don't even see why it is discussed in the same breath with the joke stuff. Anyone who thinks that fake articles and fake credits are going to push a career faster than their talent will allow is delusional. I have to say that credits and these things mean very very little often. The worst part is when you either get called on it, or it is obvious your talent does not match your resume. For example I knew a comic who claimed he "opend for Robin williams, Rosanne, Bill Cosby," and a whole host of other HUGE comedy names. Turns out he worked at the Hollywood Casino and did impressions. He would introduce each star act when they came to the casino to do a show! So Bogart walks out and says "Ladies and gentlemen, Robin Williams" and this fool claims he opened for Robin Williams in his bio!!!! 2 problems follow. First his act absolutly was horrible. It was obvious he had never opened for such a huge name. Second of all that is something people will ASK YOU ABOUT. So when the truth comes out, you look like a jerk who is trying to beef up a lame resume. That is worse than not having one. So in short my point is I don't care WHAT technique you choose to use, be prepared to be called on it. If you do get called on it, and it is fake, be prepared to look like a jerk. (Notice how I didn't address anyone in particular?)

= Thanks Tom for your concern... that is very nice, but I wasn't "jumping on" anyone. Never have, never will. Just because questions are asked and discussions are made, (agree or disagree) how is any of this “jumping on” anyone? - - Just asking a question perfectly relevant to the discussion at hand and participating in the discussion. Isn’t that what we are supposed to do here?
I guess that is the challenge with just typing alone. Lots of room for misinterpretation. Sorry. = Danny, my man, The reason one would use theses over the top kind of articles is for FUN because of the way they are written and given out. I won’t give too much to explain here since this is something in other people’s courses as well. I'll connect with you later on brother! Be well all, Dean <><

Dean,
I am not sure if everyone would recognize it is a fake. That is all that I was saying. There was no comment on Eric. I was trying to respond to the original post when they said they couldn't remember who put out the article. I thought maybe Eric's was the one he was thinking of. As for the Disney video on my sight, if you play it out to the end it has a website so people can go make their own. Personally, I am a little sick of being in your gunsights for whatever reason and so will be fading to the background for a while. You make all these snipes and then say "Oh I was just discussing". Enough for me for now thanks. Robert, I have been in this business 30 years and have used all kind oif marketing and advertising. I guess when I make the mistake of disagreeing with these marketing gurus, I can expect the criticism.

Sorry Neale, no gunfights here, just asking a relevant question to THIS discussion!
As to the last, I just thought it inappropriate to call out someone's so-called EGO and I said so. Never attacked or gunn-sitted you in any way. Again how is participating in this discussion board attacking anyone? Oh sure we didn’t agree about the EGO thing, SO WHAT, but I never attacked you in any way. And THIS discussion was just a question. Nothing more… perfectly on-point to the discussion. - - Now I'm a bad guy for asking a simple question? Wild... Since WHEN is it not ok to have and honest, adult conversation with-out being accused and attacked for simply participating?? Sad… real sad. Sorry for the confusion ya’ll. Don’t know you well enough to gun for you bud, sorry. Heck, even if I did, I would never do it on an open forum. Just ask anyone with whom I have had ‘off-forum’ communications. – Oh well, N-E-X-T! Gerry,
With regards to your question. Yes, I would say writing an article about yourself to further your interests, and one which you explicitly, or implicity, let the receiver think it was a legit piece, would be wrong and unethical. Blair (And as Danny says, you could get called out on it.)

I' have not created a "completely" fake article, however I have taken an existing one and edited it. The problem for me was that the article was good, but was WRONG on a number of details, which conflicted with other promotional materials I was using. Since the media is often seen as undeniable proof, the other materials I was using would seem to be the "faked" items. Specifically I changed:
• Where I was based (said I was based in Vancouver, I'm not) • The awards I had won (the article said I was world champion, when in reality I had only won an international competition.} • My experience (said I had been doing magic for 10 years, when it's been 20!) • There was an entire paragraph about my personal background, which said in part "Clinton is single, not surprising when you consider he spends over 300 days of the year on the road." This was completely untrue, and not fair to my wife of ten years, so I deleted it. • I also changed the photo, since the entire article was about my corporate work, and they had used a photo of me working a festival doing balloon animals. Since this clipping was going to be in my corporate promotional kit, the picture was just not appropriate. So, have I faked a newspaper article... I guess so. But I think in this case it was justified. BR, Clinton

Dean,
Your little buddy eric paul sent out a video in an email just this week about faking a news article....and its intent is just what you say its not. He put it amongst other fake articles and pictures and tore the edges and photocopied it to make it look like a real deal article from somewhere. Lame and sneaky if you ask me. |
