I stopped at Barns and Noble today and was looking for some business books suggested but couldn't find any. This book I came across seemed really good I was just wondering if anyone read it and what they think about it?

Thanks,
Ryan

Oh my gosh is it the book to get. AWESOME book. You'll never look at marketing the same after this book.

Its one of those great books that doesn't have many pictures, looks boring to read, and is pretty thick... allowing it to be one of the best weapons that's 'hidden in plain sight'.

Which is why many might put it back on the shelf. But once you dive in, you'll never regret it.

Interesting, I found it pretty basic, although I read a lot. I thought it lacked details in certain areas. Just my 2 cents though, what do I know.

If you have been in business for more than 3 years, you are probably familiar with everything in the book. He says things like, have a website, without much detail. Anyway, after reading tons of books, here are some with real info from people who have done it.

- Sales Therapy

- The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes - highly recommended

- Selling the Invisible by Harry Beckwith

- 101 Ways to Promote Yourself by Raleigh Pinskey

I agree it is fairly common knowledge as Mike pointed out, but I DO love the way he re-organizes and presents it... and there is handy “workbook” that you can secretly download after you get the book!

WELL WORTH READING! The “foundations” of success are always worth reading, again and again and again and again. – Hehehehehe!

PS
The other books are killer too!

Although, I think these books are nice for direction, ideas and concepts, but they go on a assumption and brands our minds, making us think that we need to do shows everyday to be successful and take every gig!

These type of books/kits assumes that someone wants to do 5- 10 plus shows a week.
In my opinion, the key is creating a name for yourself in ones market and getting bookings that one loves verses just doing a show.

Curtis -

One of the concepts that Michael Port talks about is the idea of "the velvet rope" -- aka developing exclusivity so that not every customer can get in. That's more or less what you are talking about.

I don't have this book, but I heard a teleseminar he did on the topic a while ago for some balloon twisters.

I concur with Donald. The first thing he does is talk about the velvet rope. He also adds 'layers' of customers. Start with a wide net, then have the funnel to your top clients.

For example, he starts with a low barrier to entry in the form of a free newsletter signup, then offer them a low cost webinar/CD/DVD course or book.

To those who step up to that next level, he offers the actual seminar. And finally to personal consulting.

I can see this working with magicians, too.

First, we offer a newsletter on our websites to cast the wide net. Then we have shows, back of room sales, magic courses, classes, and the creativity can just go on from there.

And I know more than one of us has used the 'entry' level birthday party show to get into a larger company holiday party.

I found the link a while ago on this thread:

--> Magic Café thread titled... BalloonCast

http://ballooncast.org/

It looks as if the replay is still available on that website.

You have to find Michael Port's name in the list on the right hand side.

I just bought this book yesterday for $12.00 at Amazon.com It is a 2006 edition and needs updating.

I bought the book for the one chapter on Web Strategies, and I knew all of what Micial was saying. I did like his approach, however, it needs updating because Facebook as well as other Social Networking, now has it's place in Marketing and getting customer lists.
