There will be a set of Paul Fox cups available at tonights auction at the Magic Art Studio. They are old and pretty beat up. No cracks that I could see, but plenty of dents. They still nested pretty well. I can't tell what they are made of, or the maker, but they are solid.
What would something like this be worth?

You cant tell what they are made of? What color are they? and do you have a picture?

No picture, I was just hanging out in the shop when someone brought them in. They had a dark "patina". No green, but I couldn't tell whether they were copper or brass, definitely not aluminum or steel. Deefinitely PF or a good copy.

Is there any reason to assume they are a copy?

Conservatively I'd estimate they're worth four thousand nine hundred and eighty two dollars and ninety four cents...
But that's just me. And NO I WON'T BUY THEM FROM YOU.

$30.00 bucks if they are MM or penguins (wich is the same), if they are RNT2 I would say $70.00(since you said they have plenty of dents), if they are DANNY DEW I just do not know.

No reason to think they are a copy, just that I'm not enough of an authority to say for sure that they aren't. They are heavy. I suspect that they predate RNT2.

The bottom has kind of dropped out of the Paul Fox cup market. The last set I bought on eBay was in perfect shape, and I paid about 1/5 of what I paid for a similar set from a well-known performer a few years ago.
Original Paul Fox cups are not actually rare. There are probably more than 1000 sets in existence. Compare that to 26 known set of Conrad Haden cups.

I had wanted an original set for so long. Just because they were "THE" cups to have. When I got my hands on some originals at WMS, I decided they are much smaller than I'm used to. If I'd ever find a set, they'd most likely sit on my shelf.

I got a set of church bronze PF cups at the RNT2 going out of business for a while sale. I was thinking of getting this set to have a set that I can stash in a bag and carry it with me everywhere. It's for an auction from an estate, the money goes to a widow so I want to pay the fair price for these and wanted to get a feeling for what fair really was.
It turns out that they weren't auctioned tonight, but will go up for sale next time. I'll try to get a better look at them before the next auction. What should I look for to figure out who made them? Thanks.

About 5-6 years ago the Paul Fox cups were selling for about $800 on some auction sites. They're way below that level now.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

It's a buyers market.

Are you finding that high quality vintage cups are generally down near 50% or more in the open market and in sales by private treaty as well? That's my sense of it..........speaking of which...... saw an auto dealer's ad in the Miami Herald not long ago offering two brand new trucks for the price of one ("buy one at full price, get the other one FREE!)......cups n' trucks...sign of the times, I guess.

I think the cups and balls bubble may have burst.

It's hard to say what to do. You might get a die-hard Paul Fox fan that's willing to bid the farm. I always go into these things with a set amount in mind, meaning that's what I won't go over! (That's usually all I can afford) Anyway, good luck & good bidding!

The Paul Fox name used to really mean something. I am glad to see that Danny Dew is still remembered.

Thanks for all the info. I know from past discussion with Ray Goulet (he has a pretty good collection, not like Bill Palmer's, but a pretty good one non-the-less) about the time when Paul Fox cups commanded premium prices.
