Alexander,

You need to avail yourself of the classics and get a firm grounding on what has been created before you. It will save you a lot of headaches in "reinventing the wheel," as it were.

The_Alexander,
Great thinking on your part! But don't you hate it when someone else thinks of your ideas first? LOL

It happens from time to time.

I agree with the above post about reading the classics to give you a better understanding of what has been done.

One of the best routines I've come across is in 'The Arcana Of Bizarre Magick' by Jim Magus. By the end of that routine there are 13 bottles with pendulums swinging within.

Yes, I used a pendulum in a tall bottle, which was placed in the center of my small three legged table as a preface to table tipping. All the participants put their fingertips around the outer top edge of the table and WILLED it to move. It did. THEN the table would tilt.
I don't even think that I invented that idea. Probably.

Aahh, I knew it.
well, it's good practice anyway "reinventing the wheel". ^_^

thanks

how controllable these pendulum in a bottle tricks are?
can you decide if its rotate or swings?

in this version, that I have been building, no one touches the bottle or the table under it. and ,of course, it's controllable.

ps. 'The Arcana Of Bizarre Magick' by Jim Magus is on the order. might get this baby in next week or so. <3

It may not be a case of reinventing the wheel.
I think of the effect (which I own and enjoy) Whitestar. Essentially a variation of Out of This World. If you can builk it better or differently and don't impact on another product, go and try.
After all is said and done how many variations are there on "pick a card" and they still come to market and sell. There are only so many basic concepts from which everything is grown from.

Indeed, how many great ideas have been created by someone who had nothing to compare them with? Slydini, I've read, created his beautiful sleight of hand techniques that were quite differently than the 'usual' contemporary magicians because he didn't know any magicians, nor did he have a lot of magic texts to learn from. (May, as stories go, be true or not, but it's the concept!)
Anyway, keep on inventing and thinking! You may re-invent a wheel or two, but you may also come up with the faster-than-light propulsion system, too . . .

David Phelps Abbott wrote a book c1905 exposing mediums and their methods and one of the revelations concerned the effect under discussion here. He (the medium) would set weights in various glass containers, some closed and some open, with varying weights and lengths of thread. He would then cause one of the weights to swing and begin to ring in response to a question from the onlookers. The container and weight were freely chosen. One method was "hands on" and another was hands off. Recently CW had an effect which worked on the same principle using bells suspended from a rod.

In the days of large opening milk bottles I have played with the same thing:
Four milk bottles each given a neme like John, Miriam, Ben and Scott.
Four keys where dangled by a thread from the mouth of each bottle to about 2" off the bottom. The four bottles with the keys suspended inside them where placed on the table. The sitters placed their hands on the table and I will "Command" John to give us a sign. After a few seconds the key in the bottle named John will start swinging slowly at first but more and more wild as I repeated the words: Give us a sign, Give us a sign....etc.
Next I will ask John's "Spirit" to leave us and call upon Scott bottle to "Talk" to us. John's key inside John's bottle will slow down until there was hardly any movement and Scott's key inside Scott's bottle will start swinging etc.
It was a briliant Seance experiment that "Prooved" to the sitters that I could "Communicate with the "Spirits".
I believe it works because it is a hands on method but other then that I have no other explanation.
Cheers,
Roni

I was looking through my copy of the Arcana for the routine with 13 bottled pendulums, but couldn't find it. What was the routine called? Thanks.

It's in "13 Ghosts" which was an update to the new book, and may not be in the original. Let me know if you need any more help.

Would someone describe the patter behind the "pendulum in the bottle" routine? If there is video of someone perform this tick, all the better!

As with most "bizarre" presentations, the patter/general framing of it is a major part of what you're getting when you purchase the book/effect. I'd direct you to the aforementioned resources.

Uh... if you don't have your own voice; create one. You are responsible for that. Don't ask anyone here what to say. That's your responsibility.
