This is my current project, to build a large close-up mat servante.
I often perform standing, behind the bar, and in a number of spots I could hang a servante behind my mat, thus opening up the wonderful world of lapping to an otherwise standing performance! I'm stitching together a cloth one. With only a minimal bit of experience behind a sewing machine, I'm still finding this to be an easy task, and where I'm lacking in sewing experience, I'm using a flexible contact adhesive to glue interior "walls" into the trays. I'm building a prototype first, and after that, if I can, I'll take it to the next level and have a seamstress knock off a few of them to sell at the next magic flea market! I'll post pix as soon as I can.

Been done. If you want to see a master of the close up mat servante that would be Ross Bertram who made what he called the Welcome Mat. His work was groundbreaking and beautiful to watch. He worked with coins and cards and would produce as well as vanish using the mat. I believe the mat was described in one of his two books. I can find out for sure if you are interested. I have video of him performing with the mat (his wife took 16mm footage of Ross performing many of his classics to preserve them for future generations) and they were released in video form many years ago with permission.

Oh, if it's been done I'll just toss mine into the dustbin then...
Thanks for your response! :devilish:

I was not suggesting you should not put one together. I was offering up the Bertram Welcome Mat as research if you wanted another perspective regarding closeup pad servantes. Let me know if you would like the book reference.

Tstark I'm just teasing! "Where IS that 'sarcasm' button on my keyboard?"
Thanks for the offer. Mine's actually is coming along nicely. just built a prototype, and am going to refine it a bit. When I'm done this thing will be very nice and easy to make in small batch quantities. You're right though, I really should check out the Bertram material.

Just saw the Bertram servante. I wasn't too impressed. It's great for cards and possibly coins, but the "pin system" for dealing with larger objects seems very flimsy. It does look great for when you need to "prove" it's just a pad or you're just pulling it out of your bag.
I, however, am having great success in my prototyping. It will not be anywhere near as "invisible" as the Ross Bertram servante, but for my purposes it doesn't need to be. Again, pix to come...

Uh... huh? He asked what one would be WORTH. Not how it works.
Might want to get those glasses checked and not be so hasty to jump on the assumption train. @Caliwagger: No idea. You might want to poke around the 'for sale' section.

I was hoping a more encouraging reply might elicit further participation, but you're right, Michael. Likely we'll never see that person again.
It's a pity that we seem to lose so many new members that way, so often... Who knows what they might have had to contribute to the forum or the art? Guess we'll never know. Food for thought, perhaps... or perhaps not.
