A mentalist ask an audience to randomly grab a handful of coins from a bowl(filled with coins with the same denomination), then he is be able to tell him how many coins have been taken by that audience.

Which device is capable of accomplishing this effect? UFO3?

To me, that sounds a bit like "The trick that fooled Einstein" from Barrie Richardson's book "Theatre of the Mind"! In that case there is no electronic device!

...or the "button effect" by Derren Brown from "Something Wicked This Way Comes".

Also, try "A Sound Change" in Patrick Redford's excellent book, Triangle. Again, no "device", just clever thinking!

Check also, "The Fool that Tricked Einstein" in SYSYZY. It's a rather clever effect.
Good Thoughts.

"The Trick That Fooled Einstein" can also be found on volume two of Richard Osterlind's Easy To Master Mental Miracles.

As you can see from the replies, it was very likely TTTFE, which is a wonderful effect that fools everyone, and dead easy to perform. It is in numerous places--I think I first learned it in a Penn and Teller book, and it's in many other resources, including those mentioned.
