In case anyone cares, here is the obit of Bob McCord, the owner of those banners.
http://articles.latimes.com/2008/may/17/local/me-mccord17 The story about how he came to collect banners is amusing. He had his restaurant in Calabassas. There were noise complaints from the neighbors (about the bands playing there) so Bob put up sound proofing on the outside of the building. The problem was that the sound proofing looked awful, so he was questing for a way to cover it up. He remembered seeing sideshow banners when he was a kid and he thought he could get a bunch of them and decorate the building with them and hide the sound proofing. As he looked into this, he took a fancy to banner art. Bob was a collector of a bunch of different things, so he took up collecting sideshow banners. He called Ward Hall and bought a bunch from him and Johnny Meah did some custom banners for Bob. Bobby Reynolds also sold McCord a bunch of stuff. The irony is that he like the banners so much, he never put them outside! |
