I have been doing R.I.C.E. and ice massage.
I am in karate this quarter at school and we have to run barefoot and stamp the ground a lot and since I weigh 250 frickin' pounds I am getting bad shinsplints. Anybody have any other good remediddies?

Oh man.... Time and good shoes. They were pretty common in the Navy because we ran around on steel decks.

If you want to work on your tabled faro, the Café is a great resource.
For medical advice, I'd talk to a doctor. John

Man...I was thinking John was gonna say shinsplints are the best way to learn the table faro.
There is at least one doctor who comes into this section! |

The remedies you are using are about all you can do in the short term. But you can look to the long term.
If your are running barefoot it's not your shoes, but it could be your gait and the way your feet strike the ground. Or you may be leaning foward and bending at your waist which is not good. You may want to have your mechanics analyzed (don't land on the balls of your feets etc). You also probably need to increase the flexibility in your shins and ankles. Too few people stretch properly, although in a martial arts class they should be taking you through a thourough stretching routine before going on to drills. Some people tape thier ankles and shins to secure the shin bones. And when you run do not look straight down at your feet, look ahead. You may want to check with the member called "jocdoc". (I think that's his name.) Shin splints are pretty common but what many people think are shin splint are often just sore shins. You can go to a doctor as mentioned above. But unless something is broken he isn't going to do much about it. I've seen a lot of really bad cases of shin splints. |

Thank you all for your answers. I have discovered that I overpronate. I have ordered some shoes that should help with this and my freaky high arches.
These won't do much good in class, but they should aid in recovery.

Good luck. I need shoes with freaky high insteps.

Your feet never stop growing. When buying shoes, after a time, get them measured again. The arches flatten out over time as you gain weight.
And shinsplints suck

My right foot collapsed! Feet never stop growing? I didn't know that. I do know that my nephews lie about their shoe size, I don't know if it is popular among teens to have huge feet. One is 5'10 and claimed a size 15, I dragged him in to get measured....size 9.5.
If anyone knows a brand with a very high instep let me know. |

It's too late...you got 'em and only time is going to heal them.
Of course stretching properly before and after would have prevented them but now... People underestimate the IMPORTANCE of stretching. |

I feel for you. I ran cross country in high school. My senior year I couldn't walk without searing pain shooting up my legs. I got inserts for my shoes specially made by a physical therapist and worked hard on my gait. I personally found that running barefoot was a lot better. Another guy on the team had to get surgery because some compartments in his legs were compacted or something like that. Ouch. After all that running my feet are pretty darn flat. I used to be able to walk with my toes pointed straight ahead, now they turn out to the sides if I don't think about it.
