With the crate amps is 15 watts enough, or should I go with a 30? I want to be able to be heard over some street musicians, I also want to be able to save some energy and my voice.

To have the capability to go twice as loud as the 15 watt amp, you would need roughly 10 times the power or 150 watts. The advantage of having the 30 watt amp verses the 15 watt amp is that there is more dynamic headroom so the amp won’t go into clipping if pushed hard (runs out of juice, less likely to blow speakers).
For greater dbl (loudness) look for speakers that are more efficient (higher dbl with equal power). Good luck, Bruce |

I have the dB Opera 110. Great sound 110 w, but is really heavy. Still, it is a good amp. Everything is built in so its one switch and you're off. (Two really, one on your body)

Ray,
I've got the Crate 15 and Bobby has the Crate 30. I like his a lot better. I think it's worth the extra $. He and I both have much bigger systems as well. His is a Passport 150, and mine is a Samson 300. Those both put out gi-normous sound. I actually think I over did it on the Samson for the little shows I do. I've turned into a sidewalk guy and don't plan on trying to get bigger. My show is limited in size by the number of people that can see the shell game...and I'm ok with that. The Samson is awesome though. It's has its own battery power, wheels and a retractable handle. It also has an MP3 port and can be heard over anything. I used it at my outdoor gig all last season and was able to stand 75ft away from a live band and keep a crowd of 30+ people for my shows. You should buy it off me |

Watts is not the only thing to consider.
If you have inefficient speakers, it requires more watts to get the same volume. If you have a low out put microphone, it requires more watts to get the same volume. I used to use the Create Taxi and thought it was not loud enough at 15 watts for outdoors. Now I use the Roland Street Cube at only 5 watts, a HIGH output madonna microphone and I only turn it up half way and I'm fine. The amp was SPECIFICALLY designed with low wattage and very efficient speakers for buskers. I can run the whole thing off 6 AA batteries for hours. The low wattage allows for the ability to use AA batteries. I think it's a technical marvel. Also very light weight. I could swear it only weighed 5 lbs. But I was wrong it weights 11 lbs. It's also very nice sounding. MUCH better than the Crate Taxi. Best price I've heard of so far is $199 shipped at musician's friend. Check out the chat about it in the F/X forum. If I need louder than the Roland, I'll use my Carvin StageMate which is super duper but also a lot heavier. Still runs DC by internal battery. I also have a second external speaker for that if needed for more coverage.

Why don't you just talk with the Street Musicians and work something out? If they're uncooperate, there are still other ways to solve the problem. If you think "blowing `em away" is the solution; look what's going on in Boston right now. Look at northern Italy. Look in Barcelona.
Don't "amplify" the problem. The Art of the Streets', lays elsewhere. gallagher |

It is not about blowing them away. Right now the drummer down the way, we will go back an forth alternating. Occasionally he will start just as am ending. I do not have a problem working by him. I just want to save some energy, and after a weekend of projecting my voice show after show after show all day long some times my voice is just shot. It is also about saving my voice. I just want to be heard at a resonable volume without wasting my energy and my voice. that is the biggest thing.

PS - some folks use guitar amps for voice since they're cheap.
Negative. Use sound reinforcement that is designed for voice.

You can always turn it down, but you cannot turn a 15 up without losing fidelity... Battery life vs. weight would be my major concern with the different sized amps.

I use an Alesis Trans-Active Mobile. 15 Watts, rechargeable, with an I-Pod dock if I want background music. Pretty cool, it has a retractable handle and rollerblade type wheels. I need the extra sound if I'm doing the ventriloquist act on the street, since it relies mostly on verbal humor we have to be understood. I work small though, sidewalk size shows, so I don't have to crank it, I just need little help to be heard over the crowd noise. At the Mercado there are often bands and singers, but I tend to work at the other end where it's quieter, or on the stage inside the farmer's market.

I modified my Crate Taxi last night. It now goes to 11, so it's got all the output I need

Mimes?,.. hey tabman, a funny one. A Mime got shut-down in Zurich,... AND lost his Court Case, because the city agrued, "his potential applause could distract."(!)

How many mimes do you have in your collection? The only mime collection I've ever seen had just one: The Gimp.

I rigged an orange hard hat with a 5" speaker and a headset mic for a trade show. The input was wired to a small amp and the output wired to the speaker hat. I wish I still had it. We used it at an outdoor demo of the PyroShot Dragon Egg launcher a couple years ago. I glued a raw 5" speaker to the front of the hat with construction adhesive. I bought the speaker at Rat Shack and bolted a car speaker grill over the front. http://PyroShot.com Let me add. The sound was coming right out of the top of my head and it drew total attention to my face and what I was saying. Not much elase I can tell about it. I wonder if I took a picture of it?? -=tabman
