Living down here, I'd say it's the real thing. However, I don't think it is the plague to end all days. These people sure are nervous.
Back to the high school Health class. Wash your hands. Cover your mouth when you sneeze and/or cough. Don't pick your nose. Etc. I wish the virus were more of an atomic/nuclear/mutant strain... something that would turn us all into real-life zombies. Then we could play our Resident Evil video games with more gusto. Or maybe just dance with Michael Jackson.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Even though a Mexican palentologist died from it 2 days after meeting with Obama, this is one news story that I don't have a conspiracy theory for. I'd be curious as to the statistics regard those in Mexico who have died (age, income, availability of health care...). The US CDC seems to think our standard medications will take care of it.

All I know is it is terrible for whoever has it and I hope it isn't nearly as bad as the press desperately hopes for.

It's not if we will experience another world wide pandemic that will compare to the great influenza outbreak of 1918, but when. This new strain of flu might not be it. But then again. . . .

The seeming correction...

A little perspective: Average US 200,000 per year get the flu. 35,000-36,000 deaths from related.
This one may or may not be worse depending on rapidity of transmission spread. Knocking down younger 'healthy' people rather than the usual seniors and etc. Give it a week and we'll know. So far US cases have been mild...Mexico deadly. Seems odd that it instantly popped up in so many divergent locations out of nowhere but then with air travel, one doesn't need to be in the ground zero country, just traveling in the same closed box with one. Keep in mind IF (BIG IF) this thing goes nuts, have at least about 10 days of food for the family. Canned meats, carbs etc.

John, I agree. There's a fine line. I think the news organizations enjoy the panic and widespread terror something like this creates. I think people need to be careful not to associate media hype with the actual threat a nasty disease can represent. If all of a sudden the scare goes away, it may be because it was overhyped by the media but if the CDC is issuing warnings and what not I'd pay close attention. They're desire is to stop the scare. They won't get additional funding from the networks by issuing scary announcments. Daffy you have a point, but I think the key is knowing where\what information is coming from.

Doug- you're exactly correct. It's just too soon to know. While it looks bad in Mexico, we just can't get reliable reports- there could be a million sick, who never went to the hospital, and are getting better. We only hear about the ones sick enough to seek medical attention, or those who die.
In the mean time, stockpile food, water, medications, and keep some cash on hand, just in case. (Every home should have an emergency stockpile anyway, so it's not a waste even if nothing comes of this.) Be cautious, but don't panic. We don't have enough reliable data. As for this strain of flu, it's got some elements of swine flu, and some elements of avian flu- so the bird flu scare wasn't just hype. In fact, the preparation taken by various agencies in event of a bird flu pandemic has helped the US be ready for the swine flu- we've already distributed doses of Tamiflu to the potential hotspots, and communication lines between local health authorities seem to be working well so far.

Are we not overpopulated? Between this and another world war I will take this. Less people, less global warming (cooloing, change, or whatever the catch phrase of the day is) polar bears live, lest they contract bird, swine or polar bear flu, jobs will be created to stop the epidemic, less people will be on unemployment either due to the jobs or they died and no longer need it. I think this is the best thing that could happen.

Humour is often a coping mechanism.
Between pirates, the global financial crisis, swine flu etc etc, if we didn't laugh we'd just give up and die. Destiny |

I agree, Humor is the best way to cope sometimes and I have to admit, I laughed pretty hard at some of the jokes made. In all seriousness tho, pretty scarey if this keeps spreading.
