As far as I know, Lowe's, Home Depot, Harbour Freight still have the aluminum, briefcase-type cases.

Good leads - I'm looking for a case that'll sit on the ground next to the mike for my stand-up.

I'm not sure how large you want it to be, but Vaulz makes some nice cases.

We make custom cases for people quite often. Not cheapos but you get exactly what you're after.
We made one recently that is a nice sturdy case but also unfolded so you can put it in your suitcase for travel.

You might want to consider an ATA case with a top opening. You can get them in many colors.

I use a catalog case, available at any office supply store, sitting on a barstool. That way, the case is at a convenient height - no more stooping to get a prop. |

I've been looking for the same thing but am now leaning towards a classic carpet bag. They come in many colors, including plain black or a classy tweed with leather handles. The top stays open with a spring frame and is very quick and easy to open or close. The other advantages I see are that they are very durable, quiet when taking things in or out, relatively lightweight, soft-sided so you can squish them somewhat to fit in small places (for instance under a seat on a plane), and they won't fall over or slide around in the trunk of your car. They can fold flat for traveling inside another suitcase too.
They also have the added benefit (to me anyway) of looking ordinary and yet unusual at the same time. I have never liked the look of an entertainer carrying a briefcase but that's just my opinion. To me they have a much classier look than an aluminum case and can fit in equally well with a more comical persona (think Mac King) but will also look right at home if you wear a classic tux. They are fairly pricey (around $200.00) if compared to a $20 aluminum tool case but they look much better if you are going to use it on a chair in front of the audience and they will probably last a lifetime. Only downside (other than possibly price) is that they could be considered nowadays to be more of a feminine accessory although men used them regularly further back in history. Of course if you are a female magician this would be another plus and not a downside. Something in a similar vein would be to use a black leather briefcase or doctor's bag. The briefcases are generally larger but usually don't have a top that stays open, conversely the doctors bags have stay open tops but are usually smaller. However, I'm sure there is something that would suit your needs if you search Google. Check out Frank's Ambitious Card and perhaps one of the table servantes may work for you. http://www.theambitiouscard.com/aitem.cfm?itemid=25 Here is another site to start with: http://www.carpetbagreplicas.com/index.html Let us know what you end up using. I also use a black leather doctor's bag that I set on a chair. It opens from the top and, like a carpet bag, it too can be held open via its snap frame. I was surprised just how large and roomy it is, particularly when it's been snapped to stay fully open.
It doesn't hold enough for my stand-up act, mind you, but it holds my entire close-up act, and more. |

Forget the link here's a picture. What I like about this case is when it's opened, the top becomes a shelve. Here are the dimensions 18-1/4" x 10" x 13-3/4". It has a Aluminum Hexagon Style Frame, Metal Riveted Corners, Silver Dot ABS Panels. Two Key Lock Draw Latches, Telescopic Pull Handle, Corner Inline Skate Wheels, Black Nylon Lining, Two File Pockets. The cost is $115.00

...Though I may try a wheeled computer case. I need a mid sized bag for my stand-up work; easy to load in/out of and carry off.

CW,
How about this type of case: http://www.yazmo.com/largeblackaluminump......-22.aspx Respectfully, rochaz
- We do not want them to suspend disbelief in the way they would in theater and story. We want them to think critically and observe carefully. Our job is to force them to believe in magic even against their better judgment.”
