I guess if the tassel snapped back too fast it would take the bounce right out of the sporran and really mess up your bagpipes! Ouch!

Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that Pete and Bill were right, and I found a musical instrument repair shop only a few blocks from where I live. While I was there, two symphony orchestra musicians were picking up their instruments and were making glowing comments about the repairs (unless he has two employees hanging around the front desk all the time to draw in the rubes!). He took a look at the cups and confirmed that he would be able to help me. The bad news is that the lip is not out of round as I had originally thought. I guess Burtini or whoever originally spun the cups had a bad day and one cup is a little bigger (or thicker)just below the last (middle of the cup) ring which causes it to sit up a fraction of an inch and not set down and nest like it should when the cups are stacked. He took a micrometer and measured all of the cups, and one is two tenths of a micron larger than the others. He said he could repair it quite easily and the repair will be invisible - by removing that little bit of metal under the ring in order for it to seat properly. The engraving will not be touched. The worst part of it is that I will lose the patina on the cups as he will have to buff and shine them all up to match. He was intrigued with the manufacture and said that the maker did a good job (with the exception of the one cup!). Another bit of good news is that it will only cost me $30.00 (Canadian) for the repair. That's $5.00 more than I paid for the cups back in the 70's! I can expect to get them back in about a week (I told him to take his time), and when I get them back I'll borrow my sons working digital camera and take pictures of them to post here. Thanks again Pete and Bill for your sage advice.

That's a really good price. I'm glad you could find someone to do this.

Yes, the patina was the least of my worries. I had cleaned them up quite a while ago because the edges were turning green, but it didn't take long for them to darken up again.
