I was reading several posts where there were discussions about the type of utility carriers magicians wear.
OK, I am not trying to offend anyone but as magicians, don't we have a hard enough time overcoming the whole "geek" image? This is just my personal opinion but don't you think fanny packs, tool pouches and shoulder holsters are sort of like wearing black socks and sandals? I understand a discrete small pouch (that may pass as a cell phone holder) hidden under a coat for a working stroller but some of these pouches are a little over the top for me. I have seen some magicians (good friends) who look like they are about to go to work at the electric company. If that is your thing, more power to you but to me it looks a little much. Curious about the discussion on this one...

I agree with you whole heartedly. Althought there is an exception to every rule. I once seen a guy do a close up show wearing a tool belt. His name is rick reid, He is a carpenter by trade, and a magician hobbyist. His whole act was done with tools and hard ware it all fit him his personality and his charactor. for him that worked. It was unique original and highly entertaining. It was at a contest for I.B.M. ring 23 . and he won first place. well deserved for the finally he produce a 2 inch socket and a 24 inch ratchet. many props to that guy.

Presumably, the shoulder holster is worn under the coat or under a covering open shirt. In other words, it shouldn't be seen, and in theory, shouldn't add to the general geekiness of the wearer.

I agree with Bill, shoulder holsters are probably one of the less geeky devices that can be worn as it is not seen. I'm probably going to get a high caliber shoulder holster when I manage to save up some $$$.
Fanny packs are a bit too much for me. other such pouches if under cover aren't so bad.

I guess it is a little easier for us gals to walk around with just our purse, as it looks normal.

I hear what you are saying about the holster but I was in a tourist town and I saw a guy doing walk around and he was wearing a white shirt and a black harness and no jacket. It almost looked like a bra! It almost made me spit out my drink!

Wow... That would look ridiculous!! I would probably have the same reaction as you in that situation. He could have put on a slightly lose fitting shirt and only buttoned it half way, or not at all, and would have been fine....
Wow... That said, I give the guy props for getting out and performing.

Take the props you need to carry with you and get them to fit you with a bra that you could put them into. You could have several made of various fabrics. One might even be a saucy sequinned number to wear with your tuxedo. If you really want to raise a few eyebrows, and you happen to be an expat Scot at heart, have one made from the tartan that matches your kilt. You might have to wear this with your Prince Charlie open, but it would definitely be a great look for the annual Burns Dinner.

I once saw a magician doing walk around in a tux with a brown fanny pack in front of him. I was astonished . . .

Doug:
Anyone with any fashion sense whatsoever knows that the fanny pack should be made of the same fabric as the tuxedo or a fabric that matches the vest or cummerbund. ;) A few years ago, a fellow I know wrote a column in a local newsletter concerning proper attire. He laboriously explained which kinds of shirts were correct with tuxedos, how these things should match, etc. Within a couple of weeks, he had gotten picked up by the police for committing a rather, shall we say, notorious offense. The last time I saw him was on television in an orange prison jumpsuit. I was very tempted to send him a letter asking him about the proper fashion protocols with prison orange. I love irony.

I hate ironing, I use a steamer.
I do use an HCM shoulder holster under a jacket - It's quite a nice utility item. If you adjust it properly it's never seen by the audience, is comfortable, and it will hold two decks of cards to free up your pockets. Bulging pants and/or jacket pockets are as horrifying of a look for a mage as the fanny pack. And, I've been watching those Victoria's Secret fashion shows... waiting for inspiration to come... |

I have been inspired by them. although the inspiration has absolutly nothing to do with magic.

Gali Gali probably made his own "custom bra" :
But if there was ever a better example of what "looks like" a magician working out of a "bra", I'd like to see it! |
