In a certain episode Criss apparently lets people pick up a pamphlet and after they have read it they fall into a deep trance.
Could anyone confirm if this is actually possible or is this more off camera trickery. Thanks |

This was covered here before.
Thik of it like this. If you were his insurance company, and people were going to fall down uncontrolled like that, would you even think of insuring him? Of course not. Is it theoretically possible? Probably. Did he actually do it? Probably not. In a long winded way I am saying it was stooged.

That's the problem with using stooges you see...
Use them just once, and forever everyone dismisses it as stoogework... It's too late for Criss Angel to unwind this perception in audiences' and Magician's minds, imo... It is a bit sad especially since I know that some of his stuff is real technique... Like that Magic Castle needle swallow effect... He should've thought of this beforehand...

I remember that episode. There was also a section before the routine you referred to where he was handing out leaflets to people that contained 'hidden hypnotic commands' or some such nonsense that had people falling to the floor moments after glancing at it. Frank Drebin wouldn't have been out of place on this episode, murmuring "I... must kill... the queen". The way I see it is that Criss has used stooges a lot before so sure, nothing can be taken at face value. Also, if the effect was real, surely he wouldn't have confined it to a few minutes but would be doing such things a lot more often.

Look at the hap hazard way people fell. NO way they were not in on it. It was stooge work.
Hate to be the killjoy, but this is not the Jedi Mind Trick we are dealing with. You don't "sneak up" on people and suddenly BAM they are hypnotised. Not regularly. Can you find one or two examples where it happened? Maybe in theory. The rest is BS and urban legend.

I understand A.G worked on it. He has made it clear it is not stooge work. There are many possibilities that fall somewhere between stooge and instant induction via flyer.

Let me begin by saying that I HATE what Criss Angel has done to TV Magic... He's turned it into TV MAGIC!!!
BUT I also hate when people cannot figure something out for themselves and they instantly think it has to be stooges. Why? Well, because if they can't explain it then it has to be stooges. I know A.G. and he's a f&$*ing brilliant hypnotist so I would not be surprised that this took place without stooges. How? I don't know. But I can open up my mind and figure out how I would do it. Let's see. I would hire a brilliant hypnotist to come in and do a quickie impromptu show for a group of people. In that show he puts people under deeply. He also picks out the best subjects that have gone way under. Now those people are given the post suggestion that they will stay around at local eatery to see another show. And they are told when they read a certain flyer they will immediately go under. Hmm? Do you think that's possible? Could be. One of many ideas I would have on how to do this... BEFORE I shot into the easy answer of "I don't know how he did it so it must be stooges." And remember, I HATE, HATE what Criss Angel has done to magic. Greg

I am not saying I DON'T KNOW SO IT MUST BE STOOGES. I am saying when you combine a history of Criss and stooging, his blatant use of camera editing and his rampant BS it is a pretty clear case to be made.
Ok better scenario. If Criss did not use stooges, (oh and that is a big if) then he simply handed someone a pamphlet, did not tell them they were going to go into hypnosis, and let them fall flat on their face. This MUST be the truth if it is not stooging and if it is as it is presented. Absolutly no care for if they are hurt or not. Much like his idiotic motorcycle stunt that went bad, so maybe this guy IS that thoughtless. Ok so lets pretend he did not use stooges (which I don't believe for a second) then he is the biggest north end of a south bound horse I have ever seen or heard of. People were just dropping on the pavement. There is NO WAY an insurance company would allow for such a thing to happen. So which is it? Stooges (more likely than not) or is Criss just a big careless jerk? (also a distinct possability mind you) So now Greg you are simply saying that it is done with pre show work? NOT the way it was presented and as far as I am concerned this sort of blatant BS is what is BAD FOR HYPNOSIS. All the people who seem to think it is the Jedi Mind Trick or some such nonsense. It propegates some really bad myths about hypnosis. Criss Angel is to a hypnotist what Velvita Cheese is to a dairy product.

DannyDoyle, all I'm saying is that it was probably done by hypnosis, but not in the way it was presented. Of course, I could be wrong on the actual details, but that would be the way I would do it. Just get a guy that's great at hypnotism and have him do all the preshow for me then I step in and look like a master hypnotist.
And I'm not saying that it was done that way, but that I could come up with several ways to present the same exact thing and not do it using paid stooges. We didn't see the BEFORE of this shoot so for all we know those people were being entertained by a mentalist then as soon as it was ready to go Criss steps in and pretends to do some impossible feat. As I said, I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE to the nth degree, what Criss has done to TV Magic, but I still don't think everything done on that show needs to use paid or unpaid stooges... just preshow work or creative editing. And I'm opposed to all three in general, but I can see how each might be used to present a different effect on TV. Greg

It was not as was presented, and what was presented was bad for hypnosis.
Actually in a way I take that back, it was not so bad. When people saw that crap on TV, and didn't buy it for a second, I remember a few people actually commenting on how cool it was to see it done live, with their friends, and believable. So maybe it was a good thing people see how crappy it can be so when they see it better it makes it THAT much better. In that respect Criss has been pretty good for magic.

I don't know how Criss Angel accomplished his stunt, nor am I speculating. It could be genuine, it could be stooges, it could be preshow hypnotized subjects, it could be ...
That out of the way, I do know that the hypnotizing via a piece of paper with something written on it is, indeed, possible. There is a hypnotist (I forget her name, sorry) who opens her shows by passing a paper through the first couple rows. The majority--not all, but the majority--go into a trance and she then calls them up. I haven't seen that act myself, but when I was at the Walkabout Trance Beach Resort Getaway last year, Richard Rumble told a small group of us about it and demonstrated it by writing the message down and passing it around the table. Most of us didn't go under (we were too interested in seeing exactly what it said and how it worked), but one person did. Is it foolproof? No. Does it work 100% of the time, on 100% of the people? Nope. Does it work? Yes. Joshua |

I am always interested when the words "the majority" is used. The "majority"? 51% of the first 2 rows of people go into trance?
Not hardly. Now bear in mind that the people who have come to a hypnosis show, are indeed already on the way into trance, simply because they are expecting TO SEE A HYPNOSIS SHOW! I always am suspicious because when I hear these stories, second or third hand then go to see them live, it never quite works out the way they say. Then comes the excuse. Wanting to see what was written and so forth. Oddly enough a group of hypnotists indeed may be the EASIEST people to do this with as they want it to work so badly. Can it work? Yes of cours and I have said that. But the stories of how great it works are overblown. More to the point the way Criss did it was nonsnese in the way it was presented.

Anyone seen (name not mentioned) the girl on you tube who collapsed when a hypnotiat called her on the phone?
There is another (not CA) I have seen where a girl goes into a trance when reading a short letter. Probably a ton of them on tube by now. I figure if it is real, there are probably a ton that do not work for everyone that does. Candin

Mindpro, I forget the exact wording I was shown, but as I remember, it was basically pacing and leading combined with odd line breaks providing a visual suggestion in the "shape" of the text.
Part of how it works is the expectancy, of course. And once that first person in a stage environment goes, the rest follow. That doesn't negate the fact that it does work, however. As to why it didn't get all of us at that table under, well, I can only really speak for myself. *My* reason was wanting to read the text, combined with not wanting to be slumped over at the restaurant at the time. If it'd been the right environment, it would have worked on me. Joshua |

Candin, it was Derren Brown doing the phone induction if I'm not mistaken.
See, if you are known to have used stooges just ONCE, then everybody doubts you FOREVER.
