Yep the tv show
I know the fictious fella uses hypnosis, suggestability, memory, to gain his edge. but what about the reading of others thoughts thru body language and what they say, is that all psycology? wouldnt mind reading up on psycology anyway and wondered if it was the show was a realistic portrayal of how psycology can be applied, or is it just made to look good for t.v

I had gig friday night and some guy after show came up to me and starting talking about this very show..never seen it myself
I must give it a look Though TV is TV if I were to guess(bearing in mind never seen the show) I'd imagine there is a grain of truth to the techniques used in the show but greatly greatly exaggerated! Pete |

The Mentalist, Fringe, and Lie to Me are about the only shows that I watch with any regularity.

I DO enjoy the mentalist. I have a script of the pilot episode which contains lines dropped - unfortunately - from the show. For example, if you see the first episode, the mentalist comes out with all sorts of stuff about not enjoying skiing and weight loss and India and difficulty in sleeping. If you rewind and run the first few minutes frame by frame you will see where he gotevery bit of info. Clever. And how did he know about the gir's fatherbeing a football coach? The explanation line was dropped, as was how he knew one of the bodies was of someone who was gay. Shame, really.
Lie to Me starts here in about ten days time - looking forward to that. Fringe? What is Fringe - do we get it in the UK? Drew |

My favorite episode so far has been the one in which the Mentalist grows a beard on another man's face.
Is this effect available commercially? There is much speculation in the press about the Mentalist having a sister who is also good at mind detection, but uses it for evil and wears a leotard. But that is for season 2. |

It's profiling, I don't know where you can learn this but I think psychology on criminals and stuff is a good start

Fringe is the new X-files. Lots of people like it, I think it's passable.
I don't get the following of the Mentalist. I think it's a passable crime drama but every character but "the Mentalist" is, at best, a shallow shell. I realize they do this to make "the Mentalist's" abilities seem that much more wonderful. It reminds me of a made-for-TV update of Sherlock Holmes: "This woman's father was a football coach, the crime happening here means it was the husband & wife cooks", etc. Just my opinion. I want it to stay on the air because 1.) it acts as an easy seque into "mentalism" and 2.) you all seem to like it so much. I think Castle does a better job (Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, is a writer and "thinks outside the box" by analyzing people's motivations) but, as much Fillion fans as we are in my house, we're still on the fence in terms of how good the show can be moving forward (similiar to how many feel about Dollhouse). Like to see it come back for at least another half season. I'll let something loose now, hopefully it will go relatively unnoticed but Criminal Minds (show about FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit or BAU) offers lots of lines and approaches that can almost go directly into any psychological slanted routine. The entire show is about analyzing behavior, relating statistics, and constructing profiles. In practice, this often ends up as nothing more than data mining by their tech person but the key phrases and approaches they tacitly mention are very nice and, more importantly, many people are familiar with them. |

I've seen a couple of episodes of The Mentalist. I found it quite weak. It's like a sub-par Bones or CSI... and I can only stomach CSI when I'm permitted to mock Horatio's ridiculous dialogue at every opportunity.
That being said, the public never fail to surprise me with the rubbish they'll lap up - so I'm wondering if there are any memorable episodes/effects that would translate well to real world performance? Are there any?

Yes there are..... and I honestly couldn't disagree more Davit. I don't watch much TV at all but I find The Mentalist just the right pace. Nothing earth shattering and the Moonlighting angle won't work with this as I think they were hoping, but in the long run pretty entertaining and not too predictable.
He also meets a "Psychic" on one episode that is pretty interesting too. They are in no hurry to get to his Arch Rival either.

I've been watching this, and it strikes me that it isn't so much about Patrick Jane being very talented, but the cops he works with being a bit dim.
All his 'astounding revelations' are basic common sense. And it makes me laugh every time someone says 'where's Jane?'. Lie to me is far superior, in every respect - acting, directing, scripting, lighting, sound, everything. Although I do enjoy the mentalist as well. Just not as much! |

I enjoy Fringe and Lie to ME.
As for The Mentalist, I've only seen a few minutes here and there, during commercials while watching Fringe. To be honest, I saw nothing that interested me to watch the show. To each their own. Perhaps this summer during reruns, I'll set up the easel and paint with the show on, providing background noise. Maybe something will catch my interest and I'll become engaged. Anything is possible. Wether you enjoy "the mentalist" or not, the interesting thing to us is that he now IS a mentalist.
if you decide that your character is also a mentalist, then you have to take into account that in people minds you are like him. he's now the reference. same as a magician is now, dumblemore or harry potter. it has to be something each of us put some thaughts into. how do you compare to those that are the reference in audiences minds. you have to be prepared. same goes for criss angel and derren brown. wether you like them or not. (unfortunately for criss angel btw, but that's how it is) |
