Reading through Dai Vernon's material, I never seen any thing on the faro shuffle. Does he have anything on the faro shuffle out?

I think it's fair to say that at this point in time, Dai Vernon doesn't like anything, including the faro.

Doc has a point.
In the Revelations videos he mentions that he and Charlie Miller discussed how no one had ever seen anyone use that type of butt shuffle other than magicians.

Now Doc...that is indeed an understatement!
And Jeff you are correct... Cardamagically, Dom. :)

That would be Charlie Miller's handling. An attempt to make the Faro look more natural.

In Close Up Card Magic, there is "Vernon's Aces" which uses the Faro Shuffle twice.

That's very true. I forgot about that routine. When was Close Up Card Magic published again? Maybe Vernon changed his mind on the move.

CUCM was first printed in 1962. Lorayne The Classic Collection also contains all of CUCM with updates.

There are other faro-things by Vernon. In Epilogue there's a gambling routine using several table faros.
There are some things in the Chronicles and the Castle Notebooks. See HERE for a start. Denis |

There is a brilliant 'Think A Card' routine in 'Richard's Almanac' that makes use of the properties of a Faro Shuffle (in the same way it is used in Elmsley's 'Brainweave' effect). It is one of my all-time favourite Vernon effects...

Interesting. I've seen laymen shuffle one of three ways.
Very very crude overhand. An in the hands riffle on a table, and also "butt shuffle," heh, or trying to mesh the cards like a faro. I've seen this many, many, times. |

I agree, Josh, I frequently see people approximating a faro shuffle. In fact, the less experienced a spectator is with cards, the more likely I reckon they are to do so.

Actually I have seen semi-table faro shuffles done by professional dealers in non-Vegas cardrooms. The tabled deck is cut and the halves are butted together on the surface, but then the outer ends of each packet are lifted slightly, allowing the butted edges to bevel, at which time they dovetail together in a faro - in fact, often a perfect faro. In my experience this techniques is especially effective with high-quality plastic cards in new or good condition.

What's the name for a Faro shuffle when it's not a Faro? I.e. not perfect.
Thomas, bit dodgy really for professional dealers to use a Faro shuffle. If you knew they were going to be doing it consistently you could gain an advantage in the game. |

Didn't say it was good for the game, just said I've seen it.
As for semantics, there are in-faros, out-faros, partial faros... and faros with error(s). I'm pretty sure the vast majority of card men would understand and agree that "faro" is more commonly used to describe a weave accomplished without a riffle, rather than being constrained only to a perfect interweave. Otherwise - apparently according to you - a faro shuffle with a single error immediately ceases being a faro shuffle and becomes... what? TW
