Hey, I am going to Las Vegas in August with one agenda and one agenda only. TO SEE AS MUCH MAGIC AS HUMANLY, FINANCIALLY POSSIBLE IN A WEEKEND.
I'm staying at the Monte Carlo, and I have tickets to see Mac King and Penn and Teller, and I am planning on getting tickets to see Lance Burton as soon as tickets for that month go onsale. Any advice from the peanut gallery? Is Michael Close still performing there 'cause I'd love to see him. -Marc |

Those are the only three shows I'd recommend, as far as magic goes.
Avoid Wyrick, Angel, and Copperfield (unless you've never seen Copperfield's show, in which case it might be worth checking out).
It's all in the reflexes.

I have seen clips of Wyricks show and it looks very good.

I've seen Copperfield a few times recently. Great show, but I certainly don't feel the need to see him again in Vegas. The magic in Wyrick's show looks great, and the production value looks fantastic but just a little too much lingo like, "Awesome! Check this out! You will not believe it!"
I would love to see some good close-up stuff in the area, too. Any ideas? |

I got a "rumor e-mail" that Lance had broken his foot and wouldn't be peforming until at least June 6. Has anyone else heard this?
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Yeah, I heard that, too. The Magic Newswire did a little write-up about it.

I've been to Vegas several times and highly recommend Wyrick's show over Lance Burton. I saw Burton's show and wasn't impressed with most of it, it got too repetitive, even for the lay people I was with.
Steve Wyrick's show was much more impressive, he has more energy than Lance Burton, and his show was filled with some great tricks, from the up-close intimate magic to very, very large illusions. His cast, sets, and stage are incredible, and although his stage persona needs some help, the show was polished and I actually found myself pleasantly surprised! Mac King is always a favorite, you'll be in for a treat if you've never seen him! Have fun in Vegas! |

I must strongly disagree with dearwiseone re Lance vs Wyrick. These shows are night and day, in my opinion. Lance's show is far and away the better of the two. Lance is more well-rounded, more polished, more professional, and more real.
Wyrick just came across as phony and self-indulgent. Did absolutely nothing for me. I thought the magic was dull and nowhere near as engaging for the audience. It's just a "look how cool I am" show. I would go so far as to say the show was terrible. One of the worst I saw in Vegas. My opinion.
It's all in the reflexes.

I've learned from every magic show I've ever seen, sometimes I've learned MORE from hre bad ones! The goal is to really study them, look for the patterns and formulas in the good shows. There are structures that make great shows work. Some understand them, most do not. Just see every show you can and gain what you can from each one. Listen to the audience around you as they are the final judge, not magicians.

Saw all 3 of those a few months ago. Lance's theater seats 1200 and had about 350. He hasn't added anything new. Mac was great, but my new favorite show in Vegas is Penn and Teller. Penn actually does some close-up on a big screen. It's wet your pants funny. Of course, the other thing to do for magicians is find out when Gary Darwin's group is meeting at Boomer's. It's a who's who in Vegas magic. All the heavies stop by, and it's a lot of fun.

As to the low attendance at Lances show, all the Vegas shows are affected by the slow economy. I have to agree with Pepka lock , stock, and barrel. I'm just back from seeing "The Big Three" and Penn & Teller are tops - inventive, intelligent, and some great magic.

There's nothing more magical on Earth than Teller's Shadows, Miser's Dream, or Floating Ball. Penn does some pretty good stuff too.

I've not seen any of the above-mentioned shows, but I do have a difficult time reconciling the phrase "although his stage persona needs some help, the show was polished."
If the show was in fact polished, there would be no problem with a stage persona... |

Go and go to be entertained! Why waste your money and eagerness to see good shows only to sit and study them. I'd recommend seeing all of them! Even the "bad ones" you will leave knowing you were in the midst of those who have had a dream and made their dream a reality! Remember...even if the show sucked, they had something others didn't and that's why they are headlining in Vegas!
With that said, here's a list of performers to see: Nathan Burton at The Flamingo Bizarro and Smoothini at Harley Davidson Café "Believe" (Criss Angel) at The Luxor Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo Steve Wyrick at Planet Hollywood Jason Byrne at Planet Hollywood (V- The Ultimate Variety Show) Penn & Teller at the Rio Tony Douglas in Crazy Girls at the Riviera Steve Best & Cassandra at Vegas Club Hotel Dirk Arthur (Xtreme Magic)at the Tropicana and don't forget to check out Gary Darwin's club at Boomers after 10pm (off the strip) on Wed. night! Lots of great performers and Vegas is larger than life and an incredible place to visit! Have fun! -Bryan |

There's a Japanese pastime called "Dorodango" where you spend days hand polishing dirt balls to a high gloss. lol... the correlation should be obvious. Practice doesn't make "perfect"... it makes you polished. I've seen many bad acts that were very slick and polished, they were just polishing bad magic that was inherently flawed. To them they had a great act as they had poured tons of work into polishing the production, but they were blinded to the fact that they started out with the wrong product. You have to know how to craft a good base, then build properly on that before the "finishing" stage. The current trend is to start icing the cake before learning to bake anything.

Really good analogy Ray. I have a better one though. On a recent episode of Mythbusters, they used this technique but instead of starting with dirt, they used....animal dung. I bet most of us have seen an act or two that were just that, highly polished dung.
