When Garrett Thomas lectured in our area, he performed a karate coin type effect using a silver dollar and a ring. He mentioned that he liked performing it with a ring made from a Morgan Dollar.
Occasionally, the Library Shop affiliated with the New York Public Library has them for sale. They're a special order, so they take a few weeks to arrive. |

Great idea thanks for sharing the links. I've seen them as necklaces before but never rings.

Actually I was so intrigued with these rings that I did a thorough search on the net and I found an article on how to make them. I would post the article or a link but I'm not sure of the legality of the original post because it was a PDF file made from an article in "Western and Eastern Treasures Magazine" (May 2005). I got it from a forum discussing Two Sided Coin Rings. Anyway I'm going to make one over the next two days (my days off) and I'll post my results.

Yeah, me too.
Nice slideshow: http://homepage.mac.com/johnhuber/CoinRing/PhotoAlbum20.html Someone give this a try and let us know. Recipe seems simple enough.

Mb, I made a ring from that exact site about a month ago. it worked just as it says it will. But in my attempt to make a wider band, I made the ring smaller than I like. but it worked just the same.

Both those links are for making a smooth ring with some coin details on the INSIDE and smooth on the outside. I'm making a ring with details on the inside AND outside just like the one pictured in the link from the original post in this thread.
I'll upload a picture when I'm done. Gerald

Hey Joe, just how long does making one of these coin rings take?

Mb, I did it at work in my spare time. And, I took some time to keep it as straight as possible.I'd say the way I did mine prob. be a 3-4 hours. I saw on youtube a guy hammer one out in a few mins. But, it was all banged up. So it really depends on how nice you would like it. I plan on making another one, before long. so, I'll keep track of the time.
Best, Joe

Thanks for the info on this Joe.
Since there are stores that sell these rings perfectly done, I would think that perhaps there is a sort of human assemblyline as to mass production. Or I can see if the interest were there that a mechanical assembly line could do this quite efficiently and perfectly every time. I see they range from $20 - $60 bucks. Guess it all has to do with how well it's done and how long it takes. And definitely some are done much better than others that I have seen. Still, a very nice item for the coin guy.

It's a different process than the coin rings that are sold in the stores in the links, The ones from the store are somehow, turned inside out, and then cut off, to make a ring. I have pix of a Barber half and a Morgan dollar ring if anyone wants I can email them to you. Just drop me a PM. The ring you hammer out, ends up with all the details on the inside, and smooth on the outside. Hope this helps. Joe

I'm posting a link to the instructions I found which I believe will make things clearer.
http://members.shaw.ca/john_edmonton/How......2%5D.pdf These instructions tell you how to make Both kinds of coin rings. I purchased all the tools needed and am presently working on my first ring. As you can see the two types of ring require two different methods. I'll Post pictures when I'm done with mine. P.S. To the moderator, If posting this link violates the rules of the forum please delete this post and accept my apologies. Gerald

I personally like the rings with detail on both sides. It seems to me that it is way less labor intensive to make one also (provided you have a ring mandrel)

I agree jh...And I'm surprised someone has not invented a machine that does all this tapping as to the coin. I liked the article about it from ocha as it truly explained a lot about the different type-make coins. The ones with the writing on the inside and outside seems a bit easier to make than I first thought and they look better that way IMHO, not to mention that they say more specifically exactly what they are or where they come from.
