He was very, very good.
Here is another performer in the competition, doing something equally unusual.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFLw8aH-M......fIAyOgwc
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

He had courage to go out there. It was one of two things. Either the judges were going to absolutely love him or hate him. No straddling the fence when you are this different.

Interesting that he sang the same song that Paul Potts auditioned - and also won - with.
This kind of voice category is known as a countertenor. It is a projected use of falsetto. You will notice that is speaking voice is not unusually high. He can simply sing in that style very, very well. If you go to Youtube, you can see some of the current crop of top countertenors, among them, the German, Andreas Scholl, and the American, David Daniels. Here is Daniels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa1e49KLXNU

Wow! Countertenor! I just learned something new.
Didn't Curley on the Three Stooges do that once? Just kidding! Don't hit me!

That was something. At first I wasn't sure if I should like him or not. Took about the same amount of time for me as it did for the judges to figure it out and like him. That was amazing.

It's funny that Mr Methane met with disdain from the judges and the audience. In the late 1800s and early 1900s his predecessor, Le Pétomane, was a very popular act, performing before audiences including the Prince of Wales, Leopold II and in high society salons.
Then again he could blow out candles from a distance, perhaps Mr Methane was missing that...

I liked Simon's reaction to Greg's singing. To win Simon over is no easy task it seems. Funny line "Would I like a dog that meow's? I guess I would!"(not quite exact quote but close) A bit of a left handed compliment but with Simon that's better than nothing lol. I really was impressed by Greg and I'm glad the judges where too.

What really blows me away with a lot of the actors from the early days of movies, and into the 50's was just how talented and varied many of them were. I would be hard pressed to find someone today who can sing, dance and act and do it well on all three things.
If that first piece was really Stan Laurel doing the three different vocal ranges, he was a rare vocalist indeed. I have to admit that all three clips had me laughing and smiling very hard! Even the flatulence man was amusing and fun to watch! As for the story of the man who could blow out candles from several feet using methane, I am trying to figure out how he could blow them out without blowing them up!

I think that what it stems from was that the theater was more prolific then than it is now, consequently, a lot of actors were theatrically trained, and had stints on Broadway before going to Hollywood, consequently, they're able to sing, dance and act. Look at Hugh Jackman, he's known as Wolverine now, but got his start in musical theater in Australia. |
