Hi,
Has anyone ever used a cannon for their Snow Storm in China effect? The only one I've come across is the ultimate snow storm cannon by Sparks. It's $80. It uses a 12 gram CO2 cartridge. I'd like to try it, but would like feedback first, if anyone has any. A few things I'm wondering are: 1. How big is the launcher? 2. Where is it normally during performance? 3. How loud is it? Any good for smaller performances? (under 50 people) 4. And can any snow storm refill be used with it? If anyone has any advice or experience using this product, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks! |

If you're talking about a Confetti Cannon there are many different types. Hand Held, air tank, disposable, continuous feed, etc.
Each one has a different capacity and pressure which yields a different height of the blast. There also is typically some associated noise or "pop" depending on the loading and other factors like whether or not back pressure caps are used. These all effect the amount of noise created. So in order your answers are: 1. As big as you need it to be. 2. Where ever you want to hold or mount it. 3. You will definitely hear a POP due to the compression. 4. You can cram anything you want into it as long as it's small enough but typically you would use a dedicated load for maximum capacity. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm guessing the cannon by Sparks is what you would call a confetti cannon, but I don't know for sure. The description says this:
"Imagine standing center stage taking your bow. Your hands are empty and the show is over. Suddenly from the empty air above you a huge snowstorm appears and begins to fill the entire area above and around you. It looks great and it is so easy to do. You will use Sparks' Ultimate Snowstorm Cannon in every show! Comes with one dozen snowstorms. This CO2 powered launcher uses the standard 12gram cartridge available from your local sporting good store. Launches at least four times from one cartridge. Over 8000 flakes in the four complete snowstorms you send up each time. This is the storm your audience will always remember!" The effect I want is the same as the usual snow storm in China routine (flakes flying out of the hand), but without the chinese fan. Like Copperfield's version. Is that what a cannon does? |

And...there's nothing wrong with creating the flakes with a hand fan. I use both. The key is getting good confetti.

I've actually purchased a professional performer's snowstorm kit. Comes with packets of flakes, a silver fan and a routine. It's okay. But I've also considered using an electric fan, just for something different.

My hand fan is 16 inches tall, red with Chinese designs. I formed a pocket at the base to hold an additional load using red silk. They get a double wammy of flakes in upwards of 8 feet above the fan.
If I decide on using my blast chair, the magic appears from nowhere. All in all, I prefer the fan.

Wow I thought I was the only one that thought the conffetti stools were an odd thing.
for me I think it takes away from the effect and turns into a magic trick rather thena a beautiful piece of entertainment. the fan is so the way to go. as for the best confettti as soem mentioned above that is truley one of hte most important parts of the effect. if you do not alread use snowstorms from Seo magic then you need to go there now and order some. it is hands down the best I have ever used. I hate to tell others about it as I do not want them having the good stuff. but I can tell you that after more than 3000 performances seo magic snow is the best! it is the only one that I will use and I perform it 15-20 times a month. try the tanzatu snow (think I spelled that right) I would call it slow fetti. with one regular storm and one tanz you get more snow than alaska. have fun with it.

I know David created a really nice bit of theater with it and it was spectacular with the story and the music leading into the entire theater filling with "Snow" but it wasn't really magic to me. It is a brilliant theatrical "effect" and I know hundreds of magicians copied David's routine after they saw him do it complete with the patter and even the same music. I'm just not sure what they think the effect is? We all know you're not really producing "snow"... you're really producing air if anything. With the classic "Snowstorm in China" effect, no one really believes that you can dry the wet paper with such a small amount of movement from the fan. With some magic high powered blower... you just might be able to! We've seen them in most bathrooms to dry our hands... so if they can dry our hands, they can dry the wet paper. lol... maybe I'm thinking too much but that's just me!

Is it possible to make one snow storm packet last 25 seconds? Has anyone done it? I'm trying to coreograph my routine to music, and from start to finish, the piece of music is 25 seconds. The longest I've seen someone make the flakes fly out is 16 seconds. Would it even be advisable to stretch it out an extra 9 seconds? I could use 2 packets, but I really don't want to. Oh, by the way, I'm using the jumbo snowstorm refills.
