If I own a commercial music CD, can I use it in my show? I'm talking about a rock artist's CD or a movie soundtrack CD. Do I have to get rights to use it in a show? Does it make any difference if the show I'm doing is free?

On the same note, does anyone else here use such music for their show?

I personally use royality free music. I believe you will need permission to use commerical music in your show. here is a web site that I purchased some of my music from http://www.magicsax.com great music and a great company to deal with. my 2 cents... take care and God bless.

I'm looking to hire a composer to make custom music for my manipulation sequence and juggling routine. The time of 3 minutes and 5 minutes respectively. I would like full ownership of the rights authorship and use. I am looking to pay a hourly rate and a completion bonus. It would work best if the musical artist lived in the Bay Area. That would allow for feedback and creative sessions. The final product would be delivered in the form of a recorded MP3.

Has anyone hired a musician to do the following? If so can you share your experiences?

My Musical taste would be along the lines of Maxim or Yanni'esque

Thanks Hackler, for the website. I checked it out and listened to the demos. The online store was closed at the time.

And I hope you have a pleasant experience, danchanmagic.

Give John McEwen a try at http://www.johngmcewen.com . Very affordable, very flexible and an excellent artist with an entertainment background. He can provide custom music, instrumental mixes, vocals and voice overs. He's designed theme and show music for several close friends and me. Let me know how it works out.

There's also Arthur Stead http://www.arthurstead.com and Nathan Roberts http://www.nathanjroberts.com . Both are very talented and creative but a bit pricier.

Now, don't forget to try Bill Nuvo http://www.nuvoentertainment.com and Steve Saunders http://www.MagiTracks.com . Both are uber talented Café Members who create custom music for magicians.

Finally, you can find ready-to-adapt royalty-free pieces from Nathan Roberts, Arthur Stead and these sites:

Thanks to my buddy Dennis Michael for researching these links and posting them earlier.

Hi Dan,

As Skip so kindly mentioned (thank you!), I'm a classically-trained musician AND magician who specializes in music for the magic community. My company has thus far produced two very successful music CD's for magicians, and we also offer exclusive Custom Composing -- all original and royalty-free.

Please stop by our website for a listen, and let me know if I can be of service!

Thanks Skip for the mention! Smile

I can also recommend fellow musician Steve Saunders. He also has offered free music to us at the Café and is very gracious for doing so. His music is of great quality and sound.

There is lots of Royalty free stuff available from a lot of sites. I am waiting for some Arthur Stead stuff to arrive at the moment. To answer your question, No , it doesn't matter if your show is free. If the music is broadcast in public , you are liable to pay royalties,at least in Australia and I am sure the US is the same

Make sure you copyright the music and register it as a "Work For Hire".
