A client of mine would like me to magically
give away 50 Cent Pieces in a "found money" theme. Anybody have ideas of what kind of production box/gimmick I could use to do this? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Frank

Hmm, If you have a Swiss bank account you can get Dean Dill's 'Explosion'. Then just switch the coins out with a pull or a crazy 20 coin shuttle pass. You can also do a 'Miser Dream' type routine.

Miser's Dream would be the best. Instead of a box or prop I think that sleight of hand would be more impressive. It is their natural tenancy to think that prop you are using is "tricked up."

I think you can also use a sort of "Slot Machine" routine. You can start with a few coins, and produce almost twenty coins at the climax. This plot was originaly developed by Dr. Sawa, and many other magicians devised variations, including Derek Dingle and John Carney.

Frank-
If you have to give out a large volume of coins at one time, a drawer box or a "treasure box" type of apparatus may be the best.

I'd have to agree with Andrew. Sleight of Hand would be one of the best ways to go about it.

How many coins do you need to produce?
Check out Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic. He has plenty of ideas for producing 4 coins, for example Slick Splits, to producing 10 coins (Blackstack Production.) Chris |

All great ideas!
I was thinking the more coins the better. Truth is that I'll probably perform on a very small table to limit my crowd to 1-4 people. After I tie-in the "found money" theme in my patter, I'll give away the half dollars. I was even thinking that I could do Cross of India with 6 halves and then give them away after the trick - very clean. More ideas are appreciated. Frank

Check out the "Knucklebuster" series by Reed. His first one has a cool 4 coin production (which I believe is also in Palms of Steel III, but I could be wrong) and from the third one I believe there is a seven coin production. I don't have that one yet so I anyone knows differently, please correct me if I'm wrong.
I really like the four coin production though. I really fooled my wife with it, which is saying alot becuase she knows how I work (and she's had to see all of my routines and trick at least a few times.) |

You might want to try borrowing their money, and turning it into the halves, and "returning" their coins in the increase state. This will mix well with many sponsor's messages.
You could also do Reed's "13 Coin assembly", which moves money pretty quickly. If you can bend the coins, that makes a great giveaway. See my "C/S/Bent" from "Silverado". In "Best of Friends 2" there is a routine in which you cause half dollars to appear in an empty card case. The climax is when the box is discoverd to be packed with halves. A good management prop is one or more of those flexible plastic oval purses. You can even magically produce a load oc coins from such a purse without the purse ever being seen. See "Coinmagic".

On the coin patriot there is going to be a twenty one coin production and in Knuckle Busters five there will be a 36 coin production. It ends up looking like a british flag. The coin patriot ends up looking like an american flag made of money. I went through a flag phase and created a ton of routines with pictures of flags which has led me to my new development of combining my coin magic with the art back ground and making pictures with cards and coins as final displays. These play well in art galleries etc.

Reed, don't forget your slot machine handling, where the slot machine is the wall, not your hand.

There was a great trick by Sid Lorraine that was a Misers Dream using a canvas bank bag, as I recall, and put out by Abbotts - might be worth looking into - little or no slieght of hand required, but the props look right, and the production was stupendous - lots of silver dollars from an ordinary deposit type bank bag - kind of like an egg bag routine - I'd call Abbotts and ask if they still have this, or directions for it, or anything - Gordon Miller was the guy to ask for - I think he still is. Great guy and he remembers everything!

Shoot Curtis your right I have been using that again lately it kills, I love that trick.
I can take pre orders but keep in mind it is about a month away, before its out. It may take just a little longer if there are any hangups with the duplicator etc. I do encourage preorders though. Just when you go to pay apl make it clear what you are ordering. I will be getting it up on the site in the next week or so. It wil retail for $30.00 This is my most proud project I am giving the best I have to the magic communitee. |

Thank you for the kind words. I am just a guy still learning so much myself. I don't think I am good, but I do feel everyday I am getting more proficient. I think the key to success is just to practice really hard and get the most out of your practice sessions and rehersal. I think working alot helps to. It really tightens up a presentation of the magic one is performing. I have lately really been studying the Ron Bauer series. Those are something I recommend, I feel every magician should have and read and study these. These will make a magician great, in my opinion. I hope to be great one day, hence studying the Ron Bauer books are going to help me get there. I am convinced. cheers |

You menitioned that you will be sitting at a table, with a small number of spectators.
You would probably like a routine that you can learn reasonably quickly. I was looking through Bobos book the other night and saw a routine called "Coins & cards" where three coins are turned into 6 coins with the aid of cards. It seems to me that many presentational possibilities would exist with a routine like this one. I also recall a misers dream routine which was prop based. I did a search and found it here: http://jcrmagic.com/default.asp?Cat_ID=13&Start=0 It was callde "Bottled Spirits." I don't know how good it is, however. Enjoy.
Magic is fun!!!

You could do John Carney's Hot Slot.
Where he produces like a dozen coins into a glass. The performance is excellent. (Well I've only seen it on John's Up CLose and Far away tape. He doesn't explain it.) Its written up in Carneycopiea. That may be what you are looking for. Curtis- You did something like that on your Deceptions in Paradise tape. I was so looking forward to seeing how you did it, but it wasn't explained. |

Sorry James, the effect you're talking about was my handling of Dr. Hiroshi Sawa's "Slot Machine".
Sawa's handling was published in Genii magazine in the 1970's. It was slated for the later volumes of the "Sawa Library of Magic" but that whole project seems to be on hold at the moment. (for the last 10 years at least) John Carney's routine has many advantages, including some presentational twists that enhance the effect, and a handling that greatly reduces the "fear factor" of the most difficult and scary move. It is very performable. What you saw on "Deceptions" was my minor rehandling of the original routine. I did not explain the effect because I have not changed the original routine that much, and the original routine has not had wide publication. Thanks for reminding me, though. I am preparing a lecture for the Magic Castle in August, and I may just include this, since for me, it is a perfect example of knowing when to make "improvements" and when to leave a routine alone.
