Hello all
I've been working on the Eternal ropes routine by Jeremy Pei for a few weeks now and have it down, with my own touches of course, to be performed this weekend and my University graduation ceremony. If you're knot (haha pun) familiar with it it ends with a pop knot being popped off. After watching myself on video and showing it to my magic shop owner I've concluded that this portion needs "something". My shop owner suggested perhaps popping it off and catching it, which I've been practicing but pop knots can be disobedient at times. Any other ideas for a finale with that ol' pop knot? Thanks guys -Dane |

Hi Dane,
I usually Pop it dropping to the floor as the music finishes. Or you could bite one end of the rope and pull with the other end, plucking the knot off. I have also popped it before to a hat on the table. To continue the routine, you could pick up the knot and transform to a snowstorm/throw streamers etc. All the best! Jeremy |

I have never felt that a pop knot was as magical as a disappearing knot. Once that knot pops off, everyone knows it wasn't real in the first place. I would suggest using different ways to make it disappear- in the hand, pocket, mouth, etc.
Please understand, I am not knocking the pop knot, it just seems to leave me cold. Don't know if I am alone in that thought...

I have always prefered to use a slip knot and then palm a pre-tied knot. When you hit the rope the knot still "pops off" but is controlled and can fly a great distance. People save those things as momentos, and I've never heard anyone comment on "proving it wasn't magic." During 'NeckLacy' the floor is covered with rope end snipits and knots with the entire rope restores at the end. I guess you could alwasy agther up the odd peices and restore them into a length of rope -- but I'm not that good.

That's why I invented the TIPS jar (found in the e-Book on my site called "Anti-Mirror Glass" in The Wizards' Journal #16). You use it to collect all those odds and ends rope "tips" you accumulate, and then transform them into a long rope. Of course to make the transformation, you have to use the magic word, which is TIPS spelled backwards.

Great ideas! thanks everyone!
I've increased my ability to control the knot's flight making it slightly easier to catch. PM if you'd like details but I was also thinking of trying the throw streamer as Jeremy suggested. And Pete, I try to keep my performing style more cool, suave, and composed of a Magician. This is partly the reason I've been trying to do the "catch" as it shows some smoothness of skill. Thanks again everyone, always great ideas on these threads. -Dane |

Just thought I'd update, the audience loved my performance of Jeremy's Eternal Ropes and Presentation was very key in my using the pop knot as a finale.I presented the pop knot as a second thought, as if the routine was finished and I randomly noticed there was still a knot in the rope, all to the timing of my music along with my best acting ability.
I'm sure its been discussed many times, but I've learned, from this performance of the single pop knot phase alone, that nearly any effect may be made even more amazing by great presentation. |

Just a quick story on popping a knot off.
I once had a little girl blow on the knot and I popped it off as she did. The knot landed on the bridge of her nose. It was priceless!

My wife has an incredible Service Dog Branwen. I popped off a knot after a Shoelace effect and it saled out into the audience. A little boy in a wheel chair said, "I was hoping to catch it." So, I tied and instant knot with one hand and announced, "I have one more," and flicked the knot off one the floor. "Take it to him Branwen, " I said -- and she did.
I always have extra knots for a show.

I do Whit Hayden's Mongolian pop know and I think it ends just fine. One knot is popped off and the other is tossed into the audience. I've never had to clean up the rope pieces because people scramble for them. The rope is shown to be restored, looped up and then I take my bow.

You could do a "pluck" knot - pluck off the pop-knot.
I like doing the Panama Rope trick, which can end with 3 sequential pop-off knots that I time (as best as one can) to my patter. Seeing 3 knots, one after the other, just fall to the ground seems to really surprise people.

I worked with this many years ago, trying the knot popping off (going up in the air) as well as just dropping off the rope onto the floor, and eventually found out the reaction was better if the knot just dropped off the rope. It looked like the rope just melted back together.
Of course, a certain amount of pantomime and audience manipulation helped...

If you palm a pre-tied knot and whack a slip knot you can fire the knot way out into the audience where kids fight over it like a home run ball. I don't do it all the time but it makes a good chang-up for a pop-knot.
