We are about to travel from the UK to visit our son who lives in Vancouver.
Cannot seem to find a local magic shop. Google came up with a hit of "clowninaroundmagic" but it seems to be just a portal, not an actual website. Anyone know of a magic shop in Vancouver? kind regards, WulfieSmith |

Hey WulfieSmith
Clowing Around is indeed the only magic shop in vancouver. It's disappointing in what it has in stock but Joe behind the counter is a great guy (you can see some of his work on the new Astonishment dvd box set) It's located on the second floor of the Kid's Market on the Granville Island market (it's a big yellow building on your right as you drive in)... or just ask any of the locals. The best time to visit is probably saturday. And you never know who you'll meet, Andrew Gerard drops by, as does Paul Harris from time to time. And there's at least one very talented magician, Travis Bernhardt who performs indoors at the market when it's too rainy to perform at his spot on Robson.

A short trip across the sound to Victoria B.C. and you can visit Murray Hatfield's magic shop http://www.magictrick.com/store/
Murray has one of the biggest annual touring magic shows in Canada. |

Another vote for Murray's Trick and Joke shop in Victoria. It's worth the ferry ride!

I called in to both the Victoria and the Vancouver shops while I on holiday in May this year (I live in England), and found that both were very friendly places. They were both willing to spend some time for a chat and demonstrations.
Clownin' Around were particularly helpful later, after I lost my purchase during the flight home. E-mails back and forth first established the name of the item that I had lost, then enabled me to purchase a replacement by credit card. Their web site is somewhat lacking, but then it costs a lot to maintain a web presence. However, I think that their service was excellent. Roger |

The good thing about Joe's shop is that he can do next day ordering on Thursdays. Since his main supplier is Murphy's, all you have to do is look at their site site to see what you want and give Joe a call in the morning on any Thursday morning and it will be there the next day for you.

Heads up... For those of you coming from out-of-town to see Joe. Seems the shop was recently sold to new owners who are running the shop themselves and Joe no longer works there.
Often I would refer my clients and their children to this shop. My first impression is that the owners were not particularly friendly (especially towards magicians - he seemed more indifferent when I mentioned I was a local magician), customer-service oriented, or knowledgable about magic. Maybe the owner's having an off day, I'm not sure.

WOW! I haven't thought about Jacko's in a long time. I bought my copy of "Magic and Showmanship" and my first magic wand from him. What a great place that was.

Jacko's was a fun place where fellow entertainers would congregate and share war stories and effects. That was some years ago.

Vancouver and environs has a population of 2.5 million people, and has no real brick and mortar magic shop of note (opportunity certainly knocks for somebody).
Joe was the Granville Island shop, "no Joe, no go". |

Anyone here have contact info for Joe? I was hoping to get ahold of him and the people at the store have been less then helpful. I have to agree with the folks above that without him the store is not worth the travel time.

I know that he's still in some sort of street hockey league that meets somewhere around Commercial Drive, but that's the best I can do for you.
