Who do you think you are making that judgment on a 7-year-old or anyone for that matter? [/quote] Did I state in My first two posts that I was? No and I'm not nor will I ever kid about what I think. This isn't a popularity contest. If everyone on here now thinks I'm a jerk for saying what I have oh well so be it. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it. I have to ask why does it seem your passing judgment on me for what I think? I have not yet questioned why anyone on here thinks what they do about this nor will I. You don't like what I said that's fine I'm not going to think less of you for not agreeing. Again like it or not I said it. It's what I feel and I'm not going to change. I can and will think as I want to. Unfortunately here in this country that right to think as we want is slowly doing a vanishing act. I'm glad I can do it while I can. I just may do it more till it's not allowed anymore. Yes I said I wasn't going to flame but I guess I didn't make Myself clear I'm not joking. I'm not going to explain Myself I shouldn't have to. Nor should anyone else have to explain why they think the way they do about this or any other subject. Sure I would like everyone on here to like me but if because of what I have said or may say in the future is going to make me disliked oh well I can live with that. It makes for a shallow person if one feels that they must be accepted and liked on the internet. Do I want people to like me? Sure just like everyone else. But I'm not going to loose sleep over it if I'm not. Like me or not either is fine. Randy Randy |

The parents were NOT offended, it was part of their culture and their heritage and you should be ashamed of yourself for forcing your beliefs on them. You are doing exactly what you are preaching against, your a hypocrite and half and I will be the first one to say it your face! That boy nor do his parents have to think the same way you do. And you have no right to tell them to think otherwise, nor does the TA have the right to force them to submit to her way of thinking. Shame on you all! -JoeJoe

Ok look I have nothing against long hair. We don't know the whole story here. Maybe the school has a policy against long hair on male students. If so what the t.a. did was justified I feel. Even if it wasn't to honor your roots you don't have to wear special clothing have your hair a certain way you could do it stark naked if you wanted too. If there isn't a school policy on hair oh well the parent(s) need to grow up and except that it happened. The only reason the kid is going to have any side affects from this is because the parents are going to instill in him the feeling that he should. If they would just let it go he would soon forget it in a few days and still be what he is a kid.
So I'm a hypocrite? So what? I don't care and neither should you. |

She can think whatever she wants ... she has no right to cut someone's hair without their consent. Even the school itself has acknowledged what she did was wrong by suspending her. You are the only one that doesn't get it. You and the TA.

No I get it but I'm not going to change my mind case closed this is boring.
Again don't like me SOOOOOOOO WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????!!!!!!!!! I'm not going to explain Myself you can think what you want of me. I see nothing wrong with what she did. I don't care if I'm the only one that feels this way. That should be more than obvious by now. Actually should have been obvious before now like when I first posted. |

Abuse does not necessarily refer to that which is sexual in nature. There are many forms. I feel that the TA as an authority figure used force (physical and mental) on a child who has to respect authority figures. Being of any specific culture does not give one a pass. The TA is wrong and should be held accountable for wrongdoing.
One can defend someone as much as they want. I respect that opinion. However, when that opinion is based on facts neither known nor revealed, it shouldn't be used as a basis for defense. |

Uh, for someone who Doesn't Care and Isn't gonna lose sleep over this I think continuing to defend yourself (last post after 3AM) seems to be somewhat contrary!

If adults can't do it to each other then why is it OK for an adult to do it to a kid? Because he's a kid and for no other reason? That's why the parents get involved. Because until the kid turns 18 the parents are responsible. If the 7-year-old kid breaks a window who do you call? So why not about the hair too? What changes have taken place that allow for any other action?

I ran this by my retired teacher wife and should couldn't believe that a TA would do that. I then told her the story and she said she had a kid when she started at the last school she worked at that she couldn't tell if it was a boy or girl because of the long hair. Either way the kids hair was grown for an indian ritual or event, like in the story here, and after the event the parents got the kids hair cut short. What I took from this was there is some real importance to the hair for what ever the kid was planning on doing.

Update to the story.
The TA said it was done because the boy could not see with his long hair. It was only the bangs part of the hair that was cut and not a complete haircut. The TA said it was done to help the boy perform better at school and to keep the hair out of his eyes. Personally, I still don't think it was the right thing to do, however, I thought the thread might appreciate a motive to the action. |

I have been a high school teacher here in Ontario, Canada (Thunder Bay is also in Ontario) for over 20 years.
Recently, I was told that a teacher at our school took a pair of scissors and cut a large handful of hair off of a female student as a prank 2 years ago. The student and her parents did not appreciate the "joke" and raised holy he**. The teacher was reprimanded by the principal and then the whole incident forgetten. The teacher is still teaching at the school. Students in my class told me about the incident just this year, otherwise even though I am a staff member, I would never have known. Personally, I don't agree with his (the teacher's) actions in this case either. |

Still stupid. I guess in an elementary school room rubber bands or paper clips were impossible to come by? It just HAD to be sissors, right? As though the TA had the authority to begin with? What would happen if that kid's mom decided to grab the TA and remove a chunk at the next parent-teacher conference? Man alive if that ever happened to a kid of mine....
