Great articles. Keep 'em coming.
I do think that is person should challenge and stretch themselves - especially when a person has goals to move into a new area. Yes, a birthday performer shouldn't just jump into a corporate event with little notice. However, a birthday performer being asked to do walk-around kids magic at a BBQ event may be a great opportunity to try something new. Myself, I have done stage shows and smaller more intimate shows for many years but never walk-around or strolling entertianment. Someone asked me a while back if I could do strolling entertainment and I was 100% up front with them. I said that, if they hired me for my stage shows, I would include strolling for with no additional fee if they don't mind me trying out new material as I had never done it before. They were 100% happy to be a partner in my development and the evening went great. My point is...if I didn't take the opportunity to try something new then I would have missed out on growth as a performer (and as a business). So...know your limits...but don't be blind to opportunities for growth either. Again, thank you for your articles. |

Hi Scott!
I agree with you at least to some level. My point was that if you normally charge full value for something where you've established your reputation and set yourself apart, you shouldn't charge that same amount in a brand new endeavor where you have little or no experience and are going through your first "live run" at that rate. I got the call for the basketball halftime show about 3 weeks before the event. I simply do not have anything that would play to a crowd of 10K surrounding me in that type of venue. If I had taken the gig, I might have made the money, but I would have destroyed my rep as a pro.

Commented somewhere else about this. Not too sure where anymore. They tell me your memory is the second thing to go, and I can't remember what the first thing is.
