I'm thinking of adding an effect using Tarot Cards into my bag o' tricks. What books or effects out there should I look at that you've used and have been happy with?
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

I published my favourite Tarot effect in my first book (Mindsights). You might want to check the reviews there to see what people think.
In fact, a review was just published yesterday over at Talk Magic, and it specifically mentions the Tarot effect ("Major Arcanum").

Peter Arcane - The Arcane Approach - It's a tarot reading with a bit of mind reading thrown in.

If you do tricks with a tarot deck you devalue the entire system. Get Joe Ridings Learn The Tarot in Seven Days. Do a mini reading, with two cards turned up, and one card turned down (force the turned down card). At the end of the mini-reading tell them that judging their personality from the two turned-up cards, the third card must be - and reveal the turned down card.
If you take out a Tarot deck people, especially women, expect a reading and will be disappointed if they do not get one. So don't let the opportunity slip by.

If you do tricks with a tarot deck you devalue the entire system. ... and then he immediately suggests a trick for you to perform! It is almost certainly inappropriate to be doing "card tricks" (four ace assemblies, poker deals, transpositions, etc.) with a Tarot pack, but a well-placed piece of subterfuge can be devastating when done with these cards. For example ... =============== Is the universe about us as random and disinterested as some would have us believe? Or are there little-understood forces at work, drawing connections in our lives that often manifest themselves as strange and wondrous coincidences? [Entertainer spreads cards face up on table; they are seen to be well mixed.] These are Tarot cards, the Major Arcana ... powerful, mysterious symbols from the fourteenth century that speak to many people today. [Entertainer introduces dice.] These are dice, an even more ancient tool for invoking random events. But these are modern casino dice, using twenty-first century engineering precision to ensure a certainty of randomness unknown to the early alchemists and soothsayers. Choose one of these dice, and we will use it to search for the connectedness that is ever-present for those who simply choose to seek it. [Participant chooses a die.] Before we begin, Mary, let me describe exactly what we shall do. You will roll this die three times, creating three numbers that none of us here could possibly predict in advance. We will add those numbers to produce a larger total. That total will specify one of these Tarot cards, whose identity also could not possibly be known to any of us present at this moment. And the contents of this sealed envelope, which we shall open at the conclusion of the experiment, will attest to the significance of whatever transpires. [Entertainer gathers Tarot pack together again, making room to cast the die; the cards remain face up.] So now, if you will ... a three, an auspicious beginning! And again ... a six, another apparently random occurrence. And finally ... a two, for a total of eleven. Now Mary, I said when we began that you would cast the die three times, but I don't want you to feel that I'm controlling this unnecessarily. If you would like to roll once again, I invite you to do so. You would? Fine ... I see a five, bringing your total to sixteen. Mary, these cards have been here before you from the beginning, is that so? And no one has changed their order in any way? [Participant agrees, and entertainer hands her the pack.] Would you please count down to the sixteenth card in this pack, and turn it face up for us all to see? Ah, The High Priestess. That would certainly seem an appropriate card, suggesting inner wisdom, intuition, purity, and teaching. But your selection of it was no more than randomness and coincidence, was it not? Let us finally turn to this envelope, the contents of which I will ask you, Mary, to read aloud to our audience. [The paper inside reads, "Let the skeptical ponder how it is that Mary's life path should forever be entwined with The High Priestess."] =============== I know Tarot card readers who use the above effect (which uses standard, ungimmicked cards and dice) as the only one they do for a sitter. And they would certainly not do so if they felt that it devalued the Tarot.

I only threw in the suggestion because Peabody seemed to want tricks - and I felt what I contributed could be performed without appearing too "tricky". Doug's contribution is also something that, as presented, would have an impact beyond mere magic. By the way some people who proport to be genuine psychics and Tarot readers are not above stooping to trickery. I remember once reporting on a Tarot reader for a newspaper in my journalist days. She did a very clumsy force on me (which I spotted immediately). Then she went into a canned reading. Unknown to her I taped the reading, and her next client (who arrived in a separate car) was my girlfriend. She also taped the reading. She didn't spot the force, but she got the very same cards as me, and the very same reading. At least the magicians I know who do cold readings try to do "honest" cold readings.

Mind Myth and Magic contains some tarot related items.
Another vote for Paolo Cavalli work on tarot. But those routines will definitely be enhanced if you add some reading. |

Personally
I agree with TonyB I did a routine with a revelation I thought was pretty spooky and the girl was... like.. oh yeah, in the ashes is my card... but now can you do an actual reading? so now I'm actually reading new age books I thought I would never read but is all because I think it could improve the overall performance. |

A very good example of routining with tarot card is Psychometrack from Paolo Cavalli (ebook Upsilon).
You work with a few participants, give a reading for each person before guessing which card they picked up. It is really powerful IF you can deliver good readings. I can understand too that Doug's routine could play very very well with competent reading on the card arrived at (I don't have his routine although I plan to buy his book soon for his stack and squares work). Please take the time to browse the threads on tarot in the forum. There is a lot of good advice generously given on how to create very meaningful experience for your audience by introducing tarot cards. But I believe that there will be a consensus on the fact that learning reading is mandatory (at least this is what I understood when I started on this forum). |

I still remember seeing a Wayne Dobson effect---something about the card of death coming up again and again even after discarding it.I saw it done almost 18 yrs back,Wayne was kind enough to tell me how he did it.Waynes patter about a Gypsy fortume teller was great.
He ended with a kind of moral to the story and in no way denigrated Tarot as a art/science/etc. |
