Hi, how is everyone?

just caught the escape act on brit got talent. anyone else see it? any opinions?

if it brings escapology to the foreground then it must be a good thing right? although I was a little disappointed that he did a suspended sj only 3 feet from the ground. personally I'd have liked to have seen something a little more original. but then if most modern audiences haven't seen that before then I guess it is original to them.

also, rather than comments on his performance I'm more interested in discussing whether anyone here feels that exposure on shows like this can actually be beneficial. or does it just give out the wrong image?

I'm considering entering myself next year you see.

cheers,

Hi Ros....good to hear from you again. I thought the act was OK, but he did nothing very memorable. The SJ looked a little brand new and could have come from a high street fashion shop. I'd have liked to see a beat up sj with the story that he found it in an old asylum or something.

The problem with escapes on TV is that the securing of the escape artiste always seems to take longer than the actual escape, and then the boredom factor steps in.

I'm not sure how to solve this. Any ideas?

Jonathan Goodwin had the right idea with his unusual escapes, and because they were so unusual, you didn't get bored as he was secured, so humour, or just by being different or strange might be the way forward.

TV producers are always clock watching, so I strongly feel that the escape must take longer that the preliminaries, particularly on these type of shows, as you would be buzzed off before the act wad finished.

With stage or outdoor performances though, the build up is part of the act, and you can take as long as you need to build up the excitement.

Audience members can be involved, and more can be said about the danger aspects

Here is a link if anyone wants to see it.

I thought he was out too quickly AND maybe I am over thining this BUT - does anyone really beleive that any one would be allowed to do something on BGT that could result in death? Wouldt the health heath and safety officer for the show have somethign to say about that? Yep I'm over thikning it.

Did anyone see his act in teh heat?

Now to me it was like soind a SJ escape whilst on Glass (been discussed before) but who knows. Simon sounded impressed at the heat act. He did not seem as impressed in the final - but then he was a grumpy ass anyway.

I agree with Mick about the SJ looking new (i think it was a viking one?) I would be interested to know what some one who is not in the biz had to say about Merlins act.

Does anyone in the UK know Melin?

The SJ he used looked a lot like the first one I ever got from Davenports, London. At the time I was 16 and this was the only one I could find. Long before I knew anything of Posey and Humane Restraint.

I had a text from a non-performer friend, I do have a couple of those... not many, but a couple, who said he thought his act was "actually quite impressive".

Personally I like the way JG has taken escapes and I'm more inclined to go down a similar route with what I'm doing... That said, I've not performed any escapology since September last year. Been doing science shows for kids instead if you can believe that.

So its something I definitely want to get back in to. And seeing Merlin has sparked my interest all over again.

I thought he did very well.
To compete in this kind of Circus you would have to have balls the size of melons and a skin as thick as an elephant.

With the whole aspect of the producers geared to supply fodder for critic at the hands of the multi untalented Cowell,,,any spec act would be booked as a christian would have been thrown to the lions,,,way back. The whole thing has been produced as a vehical for TV speckies to sneer at. Any one wishing to be castigated in public should go on this show. Now if your a singer or half naked or capable of jigging up and down to a backing tape, that would be different.

So for me,,,any spec act has not got a chance in hell of winning, so why bother.

Regards this escape >>> He used a Davenport SJ >>>> The rope was so thick it would have taken a month to burn through !!! The guy had a good physical look, and did the job.

Yes it has been done before, hundreds of times. Its just not the right place for it on this "show".

I think if Mr Goodwin had been on it instead, that he would have been buzzed off in the first fifteen seconds.....not a chance.
This type of hype is not for the ea, and will not inspire bookers out there to book any of us.

On another angle >>> Mr ***** has requested that I appear on this show!!! My reply in writing was yes but with certain provisors !!! These could not be met by the production team and Cowell in particular !!! So stuff them. People who like to give it out but can`t take it themselves have no place in society let alone entertainment.

I know of two, top class acts who have worked the biz for many years as full time entertainers. They never even made it through the auditions !!!! Ask yourself why ?

Its a farce from start to finish, geared to make cash on the backs of other peoples efforts. The only winners are the bosses who sacrifice entertainers in order to fill their bank accounts from the rateings.

BTW I thought it was ment to be Britains got Talent ? See the nationality of some of these "acts".
